Folks, I can''t keep this up. The demands that my job and my personal life are currently placing on me are such that supporing Shorewall to the extent that I have been doing is just not possible any more. I will continue to be active on the development list and will continue to develop Shorewall if at all possible. I will also continue to read the user''s list and will help with problems that interest me. But I am no longer going to hop on every problem as soon as I see it. This change means that I''m going to have to depend on you folks to help each other; I''m confident that we can make this work. -Tom -- Tom Eastep \ Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool Shoreline, \ http://shorewall.net Washington USA \ teastep@shorewall.net PGP Public Key \ https://lists.shorewall.net/teastep.pgp.key

Quite outstanding. There is one thing I have never quite understood, How you could provide the support that you have been without (a)Burning out, (b)turning it into $DAYJOB, and (c) charging a small licencing fee for the software (Contrary to many opinions, Open Source does _NOT_ mean free) Again, fantastic job, now go spend some time with your family. From time to time I use this possibility and donate 5 or 10 Dollar - just because I know, that also OSS-developers need to eat, drink, .... Regards, Ingo.

RE: [leaf-user] Change in Shorewall Support
Tom, I''m glad actually to hear this. The user community should be doing most of the support - you''ve given everything you needed to (and more) to make that happen. Shorewall will continue to thrive, and your sanity will to. - Bob Coffman -----Original Message----- From: leaf-user-admin@lists.sourceforge.net [mailto:leaf-user-admin@lists.sourceforge.net]On Behalf Of Tom Eastep Sent: Sunday, September 19, 2004 8:06 PM To: Shorewall Users; Shorewall Announcements; leaf-user@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: [leaf-user] Change in Shorewall Support Folks, I can''t keep this up. Tom, Thank you very very much for all the wonderful work. I am sure the community is now mature enough to help each other. You should only help when it is absolutely necessary and no one else knows, and of course only when you have time to do it. Best regards, M Lu
Dear Everybody (except Tom) I read this list for years. It''s not a matter of donation. Everyone who read this list every day KNOWS that TOM EASTEP loves what he does. He''s proud about Shoreline Firewall (and I''m proud of using it). In fact, he spent A LOT OF WORK creating the (one of the best) software documentation to avoid users to have the same problem OVER AND OVER AGAIN. As soon as a misspelling, mistake, confusion appears, the Docs are immediately updated. But most users don''t read the docs before they ask something. Analyse: probably 70% of mailing answers are in the docs. And this "OVER AND OVER AGAIN", I think (IMPO), is the main reason about TOM''s statement. Have you notice how many times the link http://www.shorewall.net/support.htm and the words "THIS IS IMPORTANT!" appeared recently in his posts ? In the past, he already made a similar statement. But if I know TOM (permit me saying this) he won''t afford see Shorewall being misused. But, for sure. TOM EASTEP deserves this ''break''. But We could start a discussion in how to manage the dichotomy between the docs and the user''s behavior in support''s mailing list. -Guilsson On Mon, 20 Sep 2004 11:55:03 +0200, Ingo Lantschner <ingo.lists@vum.at> wrote:> On Mon, 20 Sep 2004 10:43:21 +1000, Terry Gilsenan > <terry.gilsenan@interoil.com> wrote: > > >> I can''t keep this up. He probably needs to check the list less often so that the rest of us that do understand Shorewall quite well can offer a response though I am not sure if the rest of us can understand some of the truly odd configurations some users attempt (sometimes due to local requirements, more often due to lack of understanding of networking and TCP/IP). -- David Hollis <dhollis@davehollis.com>
