I'm not entirely sure this even qualifies as a bug given how unusual a case

Presumably the error is coming from `translateCharsUTF8` or similar.? I imagine
the "fix" would be to not translate byte encoded names, or not allow
them.
This is not really a problem for me as I can easily work around it.? Just an fyi
in case it is of interest to you.
