Vorbis dev - Mar 2001 - get_latency() ?

I was looking back through the libao source after some time away from it and I
noticed the addition of a plugin_get_latency() function to the plugin
API.  What is the purpose of this function and what was the motivation for
adding it?

Methinks it is for determining the latency of the audio link (e.g. if
it is buffered) and thus compensate visual feedback or eventual video
playback for the time delay. I don't remember who added it though.
