On a desktop-class system, you do want to put that complexitiy in the decoder. Streams will benifit from universally from rendering improvements, and there's likely OS support you can lean on. I'd build embedded players the same way, but not everyone does. Because of that, the common desire for exact presentation control, and the power it offers for separate encoding of overlays, I think it's also reasonable to allow punting directly to a raster subpicture format as well. The proposal of included fonts strikes me as poor factorization. Pursuit of quality or features leads either to something like mng or to a general (but probably bad) vector graphics format. Drawing the line at some point before feels like an arbitrary limitation. And note that it's this isn't sufficient for unicode support; in addition to bidi you need shapers. Many languages with 'complex' scripts are encoded phonetically, and require context-dependent mapping from the character sequence to a group of (possibly composited) glyphs.> Michel "Walken" LESPINASSE - Development Engineer at Wind River Systems > Of course I think I'm right.
