Not directly relevant to Vorbis, but it seems that some people are coming to realise the true value of DRM: "Our position is simple: DRM doesn't add any value for the artist, label (who are selling DRM-free music every day - the Compact Disc), or consumer, the only people it adds value to are the technology companies who are interested in locking consumers to a particular technology platform." <http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/5203146.stm> (And maybe it's only a short step from DRM free to patent free?) imalone
Good news. Yahoo has a history of ulterior motives, though. Let's see what happens from here. P.S: Yahoo also said they wanted to adopt XSPF a good while ago. However, they created weird and useless extensions, thus making their own version of XSPF, which is not compatible anywhere else. Hopefully. When DRM dies its painful (but rightful) death, technology companies will start charging for using their newest technologies. That's when patent-free formats got its due time in the sun. ( I still remember the G.729a fiasco: When the technology proves to be useful, the patent-holders starts charging royalty, sending deployment of G.729a crashing to the ground. ) In the meantime of course we must keep Vorbis support alive. Ensuring continual development and perfection so that when the time comes, not only will it be economically competitive, but also technologically competitive. {p} Ian Malone wrote: Not directly relevant to Vorbis, but it seems that some people are coming to realise the true value of DRM: "Our position is simple: DRM doesn't add any value for the artist, label (who are selling DRM-free music every day - the Compact Disc), or consumer, the only people it adds value to are the technology companies who are interested in locking consumers to a particular technology platform." <http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/5203146.stm> (And maybe it's only a short step from DRM free to patent free?) imalone _______________________________________________ Vorbis mailing list Vorbis@xiph.org http://lists.xiph.org/mailman/listinfo/vorbis -- Now playing: Cake // I Will Survive>From the album: Fashion NuggetPlayer: foobar2000 ( http://www.foobar2000.org/ ) with AMIP plugin. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
