For the two or three of you who are subscribed to the mailing list that *haven't* heard already... from the blurb on Slashdot: "Xiph.org has made a beta release of firmware with Ogg Vorbis support for the Neuros portable music player. You can grab the firmware from the Neurosetta site. Note that this beta release only plays Vorbis files, and may skip on very high quality files, like average bitrates above 200 kbps. Also, you'll need to head over to the positron website for instructions on how to upload Vorbis files. Big thanks go out to Monty all of his hard work, and Digital Innovations for supporting the project." You can get the official announcement at http://open.neurosaudio.com/ , plus there's info there about a coupon code that takes $30 off the price of the 128MB flash-only unit (lowering it to $199), or $50 off the price of the version with the 20GB HD, lowering its price to $350. And there's free ground shipping on the thing through the end of July. Which means that the Neuros is officially the first portable to play back Ogg Vorbis files. (Well, it's "officially the first to play back" but not yet "the first to officially play back" since the firmware is still in beta... but I digress....) The player has been well-reviewed, too. Go Monty. And go Neuros for being willing to pay to get this to happen and be first to market. It sure would be nice if all those who'd complained about no portable support would put their money where their mouth is and make Neuros a ton of money, because that'll help pull other hardware manufacturers onto the bandwagon. Anyway, just a heads-up for those that don't reload Slashdot a dozen times a day like I do. -- Graham Mitchell - computer science teacher, Leander High School "It is not possible to be 'incidentally a Christian'. The fact of Christianity must be overwhelmingly first or nothing. This suggests a reason for the dislike of Christians by nominal or non-Christians: their lives contain no overwhelming firsts but many balances." -- Sheldon Vanauken --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body.
