Hello everyone, As discussed on last Monthly Meeting, Monty settled on recommending the extension .v+ogg for Theora files IF it would work on Linux. Probably many have tested it already, but I haven't seen anything said publically, so for the record, v+ogg works on both Windows and Linux. Hadn't a chance to test it on Mac OS X, but I'm sure it should work there too. And Plan 9 :) Now, the only issue left is for software out there to recognize the file extension. That, and people releasing their Theora media with the right extension too, but that's out of scope of Xiph. Regards, Ivo Emanuel Gon?alves

Scratch that last part; I was thinking about this Wikipedia article I was editing at the same time as writting this message. What Monty said, was if it would work ON WINDOWS, Microsoft Windows, the scourge, etc. Actually, what he said was: <xiphmont> Luna-Tick: well, the '+' will only be if it doesn't break things :-) By things, I believe he meant 20th century operating systems. Anyhow, did anyone tested the extension on other OS's? Mac, HAIKU, whatever? Sorry for the mistake, Ivo Emanuel Gon?alves
Lets not try and be too creative. There's no downside to being more conservative and using .vogg .oggv .oggvideo .ogv .theora or any other reasonable combination. While it may be strictly permissible to use .v+ogg , it's bound to cause issues for some software, which may not have the most robust filename or url parsing. Additionally a + has to be escaped in a URL. .v%2Bogg doesn't look quite so cool. There's no technical reason to try and put a plus sign into a file extension just for the sake of it. It will just confuse and infuriate people for no benefit. I've been accepting .ogv in windows for a long time. I think .vogg is a good choice or even .oggvideo . .oggv is going to be unfortunate becuase it could be mistakenly thought to be ogg vorbis for those not in the know. Zen. I unfortunately don't know Monty so well, thus why I took his words seriously. I suppose if someone asks one can recommend .video, but .ogg's probably going to always be the dominating one. Oh, and sorry for having brought this up. Was just trying to help, but yeah, it wasn't needed or well planned. I'll be shutting up now. -Ivo
