The following are some comments about Syslinux documentation as present in version 4.06 - 5.00pre9. 1_ In "./NEWS", the changelog for version 4.04 includes "GCC 4.5 fixes". Maybe the changelog for Syslinux 4.06 should include "GCC 4.7 fixes" (or 4.7.x ?). 2_ In "./NEWS", the changelog for version 4.05 includes "ISOLINUX: remove the .img file support". Since ".img" might have several possible interpretations, maybe it should be specified as "ISOLINUX: remove the FDIMAGE floppy.img file support" or alike. 3_ In Syslinux 4.04, a new "./diag/" directory was added, mostly related to MBR/VBR code. This directory and its subdirectories are the only ones containing instructions for the final user regarding the MBR. The wiki pages regarding the MBR have been updated since 4.04, but the documentation in the Syslinux package have not. Maybe this "./diag/" directory should be moved inside "./mbr/" (and also correcting accordingly any Makefile code or anything else), and the documentation could be updated (see the wiki). 4_ In several documents, a "cat" command is mentioned as a method to write code to the MBR. But using "dd" (with the relevant command options) is mentioned as preferable. Thus, maybe each relevant "cat" command mentioned in the documentation should be replaced by a reference to read the appropriate document regarding the MBR, where all the details and the recommended method (not only "cat") are explained. 5_ The code in "./mbr/altmbr*.*" has been corrected in Syslinux 4.06. Earlier altmbr code was always setting the first partition as active, so users using versions prior to 4.06 (most current distros by the time I'm writing this) should use the new code. Maybe this correction should be mentioned in the changelog for Syslinux 4.06. 6_ In ./doc/memdisk.txt ( item "b)" ), the information about cylinder and head values (limits, "[*] note") is inaccurate. 7_ In "./doc/memdisk.txt", item "e)" is not clear enough for a simple user. (Are those "edd" options for HDD only, for FDD only, or for both? What happens for each case? - I am asking here what IMO should be answered in the documentation.) 8_ In "./doc/pxelinux.txt", maybe some information about iPXE should be added. If my comments above need more specific details or clarification, just ask. TIA, Ady.
