[R-jobs] employment opportunity for Fisheries Post Doc and R programmer
*August 12, 2012* ** *Postdoctoral Researcher working on spatial models of marine wildlife, using R. * Integrated Statistics is looking for a post doctoral scientist to work with the Passive Acoustics Research Group and Large Whale Research Group, part of the Protected Species Branch at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center in Woods Hole, Massachusetts (http://nefsc.noaa.gov/psb/acoustics/).We are looking for someone to bring new ideas, approaches and analytical methods to derive abundance, density and distributions of marine mammals from passive acoustics, tagging and visual sightings data. We are interested in candidates with experience working in the R software environment. This position is for one year full time with the possibility of renewal based on availability of funding and job performance. Limited funds for travel to conferences, workshops, and/or field work is also available. The successful candidate will work on three main areas: 1.Develop new methods to analyze and visualize long term records of passive acoustic (i.e. whale calls) data together with the NEFSC Passive Acoustics Program 2.Use passive acoustic data (whale and fish calls) to derive estimates of calling and densities of animals together with the NEFSC Passive Acoustics Program and collaborate with scientists at CREEM (the Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modeling at the University of St Andrews). 3.Explore different analytical options for estimating density of marine mammals from visual sightings, acoustic records and tagged animals, working with the NEFSC Passive Acoustics and Large Whale Programs, and scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution . We are specifically looking for a candidate who will come with a strong statistical background and an interest in trying new analytical methods in areas where conventional approaches are currently used, as well as developing new methods for integrating acoustic, visual and tagging data. We're looking for someone interested in moving beyond the standard, generalized additive model based, approach to handling these data. Examples of some of the existing approaches to these questions can be found here: http://cetsound.noaa.gov/cetacean.html andhttp://www.creem.st-and.ac.uk/decaf/ /Preferred Qualifications:/ ?PhD in spatial ecology, or spatial statistics; ora PhDin oceanography, population ecology, or marine biology, or similar field, with strong spatial analytical skills. ?Three or more years experience in analysis of large volume, long-term datasets, evidenced by publication in peer-reviewed journals. /Additional requirements:/ ?The position requires access to US Federal office buildings or ships and communication networks. Applicants do not need to have US citizenship but they do need to obtainwork documents that do not expire during the contract period, before the start of employment. ?Able to pass government background security check, required for working within a US government facility.
