when running long functions with cat() commands inside, the requested data
doesn't show up until either the function has finished or the window is
resized.
 this is very frustrating for development purposes.

This is an FAQ, not a bug.  See "6.3 When using Rgui the output to the 
console seems to be delayed." in the Windows FAQ.  Please note that it is 
considered impolite to not scan the FAQ before posting a bug report.  The 
Windows FAQ is usually very easy to find -- it's right there under the 
"Help" menu in the Windows GUI.

Why are you posting something answered in the rw-FAQ as a bug report?
*That* is `very frustrating'.

Try reading

@section When using Rgui the output to the console seems to be delayed.

and see if you can work out what mistakes you are making.

then....
