R devel - Sep 2002 - snapshot Permission denied

With todays devel snapshot I get

[40] /.../R : tar -xf R-1.6.0beta_2002-09-11.tar
tar: R-1.6.0/date-stamp: Could not create file: Permission denied

Is a file owner or something set wrong in the snapshot?

I tried yesterday's snapshot a few times but had trouble with an
unexpected EOF in the gunzip. This is usually a glitch in the download,
but it happened a couple of times, with both wget and Netscape, so I
suspect the source may have been corrupt.

Well, to answer my own question:

You stupidly forgot to get rid of the directory created the day before,
and the date-stamp file is read only so tar cannot overwrite it. You
should know better. Have a good weekend.
