Reading some old r-help e-mail I had missed, I came across a message from Brad McNeney (<URL:http://www.ens.gu.edu.au/robertk/R/help/00a/2068.html>), and it was apparent that he has had the same problems as I, but solved it by using gcc instead of cc. Recent communication between Ray Brownrigg and Prof Brian D Ripley enabled me to compile and get R running myself, and indeed, the problem has not occured in a number of runs after I did this, I look upon it as solved. So, it seems like it may be problematic to use the standard cc compiler on the alpha platform with Digital UNIX to compile R.
