This could be caused by broken helper locking which was recently fixed.  Have
you tried any kernel >= 2.6.8.1?

No, we're still using kernel 2.4; currently we're using kernel based off
of
2.4.21.  We're in the process of migrating to Suse's 2.4.27 kernel, but
we
haven't tried reproducing the bug on that version yet.  Do you have any
pointers
to the specific patch that might have fixed things?  We could certainly try
that.

The patch is in the archives here:

and was already accepted for 2.4.28.  If you can't use 2.6.x, at least try
testing 2.4.28-rc1.
