[Weft QDA users] how to display the text from all sub-categories
Dear all, I am new to weft-qda. I would like to know how to display the text of a whole category when I coded directly into sub-categories. E.g. the category is ''Europe'' and includes all EU member states as sub-categories. I coded passages of my interviews into the respective country sub-categories, but would like to display all text of the whole category ''Europe''. However when I double click it (or highlight and then click on view) a windows opens with now text passages in them. Dou I hve to code text passages on all hierarchical levels? Thanks in advance for your help. Cheerio, Bernhard

Dou I hve to code text passages on all hierarchical levels? There''s no single way to do this in the current version of Weft. You could open each of the sub-categories in turn, use CTRL-A to select all text, then mark (CTRL-M) all that text with the parent category. Or you could use a query, something like IS CODED BY ''France'' OR IS CODED BY ''Netherlands'' OR IS CODED BY ''Lithuania'' ... Neither of these is ideal but both should work. Incidentally, after user feedback this is addressed in Weft QDA 2: you can do a ''CODED BENEATH'' query to collect all marking of subcategories, and queries are also saved and updated to reflect changes. But I wouldn''t recommend Weft QDA 2 for real use just yet. cheers alex

I think I will wait until I have coded all interviews first.> Incidentally, after user feedback this is addressed in Weft QDA 2: you > can do a ''CODED BENEATH'' query to collect all marking of subcategories, > and queries are also saved and updated to reflect changes. I also checked the feature request page and wondered if it would be too late to ask for a context menu option for coding, i.e. highlight text, then click right mouse button, there access coding tree and select the appropriate sub/category. I think that would save the user a lot of clicking. Not sure though how much work that would be... Really like the program. Thanks for all the good ruby work. Benrhard

It wasn''t possible to add context menus in Weft 1, but it''s now pretty easy, and many of the common elements (eg the category control, document list) now sport them. I''d have to give some thought to the UI for navigating through the tree in a context menu, but it sounds like a good idea.> Really like the program. Thanks for all the good ruby work. Thanks, that''s kind of you to say so. alex

I have far too many sub/categories, so always have to click between windows. I am curious about the new version. If you want I could do some testing with the data I am working on at the moment. -b
