samba - Mar 2002 - winbindd not connecting to server

RH7.2 with samba 2.2.3a


[root@fs root]# smbpasswd -j CG -r mousetrap -U dcurry
Password: 
Error connecting to mousetrap
Unable to join domain CG.


I know the password is correct.
nothing in the smbd, nmbd, or messages log files.  now where do I look?
