Yup, to my knowledge, Samba will only accept NetBios Names. If the name does not resolve (ie. on a different subnet, with no WINS server or other means to resolve netbios names, use the -I switch. Ex: smbclient //netbiosname/share -I 192.168.80.1 The syntax for smbmount may be different (it used to be the same as smbclient, but was later changed to resemble entries in fstab) Regards> Hi All, > > i can't connect to my Suse-6.3, Samba 2.0.6NT-Domain with the use of> IP-Addresses. Hi All, i can't connect to my Suse-6.3, Samba 2.0.6 NT-Domain with the use of IP-Addresses. Using Netbios Names works fine and the nmbd log the name request. Trying the same with the correct IP from Windows 98se (net view \\192.168.80.1 instead of net vie \\elrond) rsult in a "host not found" error message. Testing the same with ping or tracert works fine. After browsing the faq and textdocs i'm still confused where to get more info or help. Hopefully this is the right place. greets Tom
I can connect fine by IP to my Samba box (RH7.2 and Samba 2.2.0). Try adding the IP in as an addition netbios name - I forget the parameter for this though.... Thomas, I may be (probably am...) mistaken, but as I recall, win95/98 did not have the ability to use ip address in the \\servername format. Windows NT does - and it works just fine with samba, as it does with other NT servers. Unfortunately I don't have win98se installed anywhere to test this; but you might make a simple test from your win98se box to verify that it (as a client) has this ability by trying the same test against the ip address of a winnt server on your network. Hope this helps, Don -----Original Message----- From: Thomas Scholten [mailto:mosquito@planet-interkom.de] Sent: Monday, April 23, 2001 8:03 AM To: samba@lists.samba.org Cc: nt-dom@lists.samba.org Subject: RE: Can't connect via IP Address Hi All, i can't connect to my Suse-6.3, Samba 2.0.6 NT-Domain with the use of IP-Addresses.
