Hi Alexander, That IS pretty crazy. Do you mean that they do not appear in the explorer window when you look at the share from your pc, or that you actually log in as ROOT on your mandrake system and do an ls on the directories in question, and the files are not there under unix? Don -----Original Message----- From: Alexander [mailto:user@compulabs.dhs.org] Sent: Monday, April 16, 2001 1:17 PM To: samba@samba.org Subject: samba issues Good afternoon. My name is Alexander Moloksher. recently i've finished few installation of samba file server on Mandrake 7.2 platform. I have options strict locking = yes, prefered master =yes, local master =yes, domain master = yes, os level = 33 in smb.conf. i used default samba packages shiped with mandrake 7.2. everything was going smoothly, especialy with strict locking = yes options, that took away anoying socket errors, but... i found that on all 3 servers i've done files just GONE !!!, they disappeared from directories on samba server leaving them empty !!!!!. all files in share root are still in place but files in subdirectories gone missing. This is absolutely crazy.. directories still there but they empty. All 3 samba servers not connected to internet and not accessable by user yet. They being tested at the moment. Please help me out, cause this is must be something wrong with how samba file system handles subdirectory content. please find my smb.conf attached to this message. kindest regards. Alexander Moloksher. P.S. i've just installed samba 2.2 alpha 3 and having exactly the same problem
Alexander, I know of NOTHING in samba that would remove files from a directory without being explicitly told to by the user. I notice that the one share that is NOT commented out points to the /var/tmp subdirectory. It is possible that your Mandrake installation is set up to 'clean out' the tmp directory periodically... Sorry Alexander, Just can't believe this is a samba issue. Try this; create a bunch of files on your 3 servers and then shut down samba for the normal amount of time that it takes the files to disappear; see if they still do. don -----Original Message----- From: Alexander [mailto:user@compulabs.dhs.org] Sent: Monday, April 16, 2001 14:45 To: MCCALL,DON (HP-USA,ex1) Cc: samba@samba.org Subject: Re: samba issues looks like this is something to do with filesystem. ihad a look in log files just now and nothing seems to be with any os activity. on second server share name is /var/share and still it's being wiped out. windows boxes are win2k sp1. files are not going missing in a second. it takes few hours to get that. i have 777 permissions on shared directory right now. on second server we moved about 4 gig of data. we checked all files ater we finished with copying, even crc's, and nearly all of it gone overnight. once again in share root everything seems to be OK. ----- Original Message ----- From: "MCCALL,DON (HP-USA,ex1)" <don_mccall@hp.com> To: "'Alexander'" <user@compulabs.dhs.org>; <samba@samba.org> Sent: Tuesday, April 17, 2001 4:16 AM Subject: RE: samba issues> Alexander, > I know of NOTHING in samba that would remove files from a directorywithout> being explicitly told to by the user. > I notice that the one share that is NOT commented out points to the/var/tmp> subdirectory. Hello good people at samba.org I'm having some problems with samba, here is the situation. I edited my smb.conf file and test it with "testparm" I then do a smbclient -L #UNIX SERVER# and I get a session request to #UNIX SERVER# failed session request to #SAMBA SERVER# failed Can you tell me where I go from here? This problem accrued after we switched from a UNIX firewall to a NT ISA. I have been through the DIAGNOSING YOUR SAMBA SERVER on the samba.org web site and stuck at TEST#3 can you tell me what address should I put in the network interface field, is it the address of the network adapter for the samba server? Can you please help? _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
