samba - Jan 2001 - Error during make

I'm running Debian Linux 2.2r2 on an i386 and when I
run make I receive an error in /lib/substitute.o
"undefined reference to automount_lookup" then it
says: collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [bin/smbd] Error 1

I'm not even installing with the automount option. 
Any clues?

while installing samba, on excuting make command
the /lib/system.c gives a return pointer error.
would this affect my working of samba.
Is there a way to rectify this.

I am trying to compile samba-2.2.6 for HPUX 10.20.
All goes well if I do not include the winbind option.
If I use the ./configure --with-winbind option it goes through the first
phase without problem.

When I use the make cmd I receive the following error: (debug logging turned
on)
