This is obviously not a long term acceptable solution. Could someone
please enlighten me as to the permanent solution, or at least see why it
doesn't work? This is not my problem, therefore I have not had the
opportuntity to test - I don't have a version that old. Let me know if it
is solved in a newer version as well. Thanks.
It is a workable solution, although the generally accepted solution would be
better ........
let me try on the exact steps ....
samba 1.9.18p10 on redhat 5.2
clients are accessing form WinNT Workstation 4.0 sp3/4
relevant part of smb.conf ....
[homes]
comment = %U's Files
browseable = no
writable = yes
scenario ....
1) a user double clicks on network neighborhood
2) double clicks on the samba server
3) their directory appears BUT when they right click/propeties on it
they get an error message "The server <servername> does not accept
remote
requests" and an information box shows but with nothing on directory size.
Attempted workarounds
1) map the offending directory
2) go to mycomputer/mappeddirectory and either a) show details or b)
right click on the mapped directory ... both instances produce no error
message but dreadfully incorrect information (0 megs used 3.96 gigs
free!!??!!! when there is actually 32 megs used in the directory)
(Un!?)acceptable workaround
1) open the offending directory
2) select all/right click/properties and a summary of directory size
appears ...
Let me know if this is clear ....

Mathematicians are like Frenchmen: whatever you say to them they
translate into their own language, and forthwith it is something
entirely different.
