Hello all My environment is like this: NIS server running on sun, 10 SAMBA servers on HPUX and many Win98 Win2000 clients.. At the begining i tried to make the user authentication very simple. Instad of having 3 passwords: (1) - PC password (2) - Unix (NIS) password (3) Samba password. I joined my Samba server to an NT DOMAIN and after that the user had only 2 password: (1) - PC password ( from the PDC) (2) - Unix password (fron NIS) without any smbpasswd file , and it working great. What i am trying now is this: I config my Samba server as PDC , i try to make the authentication process only against the NIS (so that user will only have one password - Unix password) but i could not done it. I always need to user the smbpasswd in order to make currect login (and thats a problem for me, becuase i can not handle 10 smbpasswd files on 10 diffrent server. Is there anyway i can make this process come true ??? My final goal is to config the 10 Samba servers as PDC and the authentication process will use only the Unix password (NIS). I hope these questions are appropriate for this list, but I am at my wits end. I have recently set up my first Linux machine running Slackware 7.1 and configured Samba as a PDC. Unfortunately, I have run into a couple of problems for which I can't find answers. Here are the problems. 1. My two Windows 98 client connect with no problem. However, when I try to share a folder on one of these clients, I get an error (when adding users) that the list of users is not available and to try again later. Any suggestions on this would be most appreciated. 2. Over the past couple of weeks I have spent a great deal of time reading through a pair of books on Samba that are online. I have followed their suggestions very carefully when it comes to setting up shares. However, it seems that I can't access these shares from the 98 clients unless I use chmod to set permissions on those directories to 777. It would appear that I should be able to allow members of a group--call it family--to be able to do whatever they want in that directory while denying everyone outside of that group access or at least deny them the ability to add or change files within those directories. Thanks in advance, Mitch
I am trying to set up samba as PDC for the first time. It's samba 2.0.7. I have followed the steps as explained in "Using Samba" online book, but it says it cant find the share. HELP I have Samba 2.0.7 up and running on Red Hat Linux 7.0 as a PDC for a network of WIN 98 and a few WIN2000 machines. Works Fine. There are two choices for sharing the Win98 resource, Share Level or User Level. User Level wants to get a list of authorized users and or groups from the Samba Server acting as a PDC. The problem is I get a response saying the list of users and or groups cannot be read at this time. Try again later. Obviously later never happens. Does Samba not support this or am I missing something. The WINs server is enabled, the Windows box has the WINs server IP address, the wins.dat file exists but contains machine names not users as I would expect. If this is not where the WIN98 client gets the user list from where is it. Thanks, Woody Pritchett Hopewell Designs, Inc hpritchett@hopewelldesigns.com
Hello I'm working for a client who wishes to change all his windows nt servers to linux servers, but he must retain File Serving capabilities, and 85% of his terminals are windows (the rest are macintoshes). For security, I'm thinking about using linux+samba+winbind to use unix users as domain users. What I imagine is that someone logs on the network and have access to his(her) home directory, plus a "Shared Documents" directory, which is someplace everybody in a particular group can access. What's the difficulty of doing that ? I'm really new to samba and only used that as a WINS server on routers. If anyone can also tell me real case studies for similar situations, please send me also. Hi Lester, Yes I did, I added my win2k user account name to smbpasswd and passwd. I did not change anything I just went to work and came back last night and tried it again. Now I get the following message: 'The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "bla-bla": The account used is a computer account. Use your global account or local user account to access this server' I did check that the everything is lower case and no spelling mistakes. Now the creditials I use account on Win2k that I always use to logon (this account is a copy on the local admin account), it is also the account that I added to smdpasswd and passwd. I double checked that the passwords on both pc (my and server) are the same. I also tried to use the root account from my pc to join the domain but then this is the error message that I get: 'The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "bla-bla": Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password' Now I known the credintials are correct because I use it via Putty to logon with SSH. I tried a search on google on these errors, all the results I got back were people that have the same problem but have not found any solutions to them yet. Any Ideas, suggestions, suggested readings? And how does that help??? You do know that samba passwords are different to unix passwords, due to the fact that the windows and unix password hashes are incompatible? You MUST add an smbpasswd for root to be able to join machines to the domain (unless you are using an LDAP backend for samba). Btw, there is a whole section on this in the samba-howto-collection, have you read through that? Also, some other docs like http://www.mandrakeuser.org/connect/csamba6.html may be worthwhile reading. I understand that you can configure samba to act as an NT PDC. I have set up my server according to the documentation from the samba.org website. I am using a windows XP client. I am able to get it to join the domain successfully. However, after reboot, it indicates that either the domain controller in down or i do not have a computer account set up. I have followed both the manual and "On-the-Fly" machine trust account setup steps with the same results. I am using samba version 2.2.3a-6. Any help with this would be appreciated as our company is working hard to develop an alternative to the Microsoft PDC. This is more of an advice question than a technical one. I have been running Samba successfully now for several years with different versions in a workgroup of about 50 pc's. We started with just three and have grown tons. ANyway my question is can I use samba as a PDC and gradually move over my workgroup pc's or do they all have to join the domain at once? I have 4 samba file servers and 1 w2k fileserver (running sql 2000 yuck!) I don't know much about domain systems other than there is one password database. Right now if I add a user I have to add him to all the servers seperately. Tony McGrew www.multicam.com
