Hey all... I'm having problems with SAMBA.. (actually, just one) Basically we have 2 SUBNETs here.. one for Windows Only machines (192.168.9. subnet) and that subnet includes the WINS server (192.168.9.1) and we have another subnet for Linux Machines .. (192.168.1. subnet) Now.. i have a Linux machine that also has Windows on it (Dual boot) on the 192.168.1 subnet... the machine works fine in Linux... but in Windows, it can view all the computers in the 192.168.9. subnet and view them and use them etc, but we can't actually go into the main WINS server computer (192.168.9.1... and this computer has most of the files that people use) Would anyone be able to suggest any reason for why this is happening? Any help would be greatly appreciated... Regards, Gonzalo.
OK, I have a samba question here. Here's the scenario - Samba server w/ samba 2.0.4a running solaris 7 - A windows machine w/out SNC can mount the home directory as \\<samba_server>\<login name> but when the user copies files from the local pc to that mounted home directory, it either copies the files w/ nobody as the uid or gives that "can't copy file because the disk is write protected ..." I can sort of see why the nobody set got created from the smb.conf file but now my questions are: 1. Is there a way to override that write protected error (i.e. Is there a way to have someone copy files to their UNIX mapped home directory without giving the access denied error.) 2. Is there a way to copy a pc-local resided file to the mounted home directory and give the owner and right permissions to <login_name> instead of nobody. I definitely know that the guest account flag has something to do with it but not how. Ok...I have managed to config a samba server on a linux machine. When I use the command: smbclient -L servername it gives me a list of shares that I can access. For unknown to me reasons these shared servers (WNT and W98) are only a few compared to what appears on the NetworkNeighbourhood on Windows. Why is that? Is there a special setting I should do to every windows machine or is it something to do with the samba server?? please help Vas ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Hi @, One of our clients is interested in having SAMBA installed on their MPE system. I figured out how to install samba. How do we setup security (do we have to install something on each NT-box)? I would like to be able to logon with a password to the MPE system. I figure its some Samba config issue or something to do with Win 95 interaction with the new Samba. We have tried patches from MicroSoft for password encryption to no avail. Has anyone ever heard of a problem like this? I listed a Samba log file for a user on Win 95. Is there anyone in the S.F. Bay Area that you can suggest that is available for Samba consulting? Hi Andrew, I am in the process of downloading the file Samba-2.2.3a-sd-10.20.depot.gz from the web address: http://hpux.connect.org.uk/hppd/hpux/Networking/Misc/samba-2.2.3a/. I had downloaded the source package from another site. But when I tried to run the ./configure command, I received several errors that said the gcc and cc compilers were not set up correctly. So I decided to try the binary version so that I could get around the problems with the compilers. The site that I downloaded the source package also had a few binary packages. But they did not have the binary for Samba 2.2.3a. I will likely be emailing you from time to time as I set Samba up on this machine and I was wondering if that would be okay with you? I am subscribed to samba@lists.samba.org and could send my questions to that mailing list. But I just thought that emailing you would more timely. I'm trying to print from my w2k server to some printers on my SAMBA server. All of our printers on the unix side are attached through the network. In network neighborhood, i can see all the printers on the samba server. I can add the printer. When I double click on the newly created printer, I get "access denied, unable to connect". Any ideas on what I need to do. PS. My smb.conf file is on a different system and I cannot send it to you all. Donna Smith Lockheed Martin 703-453-3208
Greetings ! I am setting up a SAMBA file server and I can't seem to browse my UNIX samba fileserver on the Windows Domain... Will SAMBA work if the client and server are on a different subnet ??? Should client & server be on the same subnet or can it be different ??? Thanks ! Gary

I can read and write to the bsd boxes from NT and to the NT boxes from the bsd boxes. I set them up on the domain, same subnet. Don't know if it will work if they are on differant subnets. -- Chip

Will, I read your post, and the error messages you were getting on the 'net join' command are pretty much the exact thing I'm getting. Can you please elaborate on what you did to fix it? What version/dist. of kerberos, what flags to compile it? I'm using SuSE 8.2 professional, samba 3.0 b3, and have been trying the MIT version of kerberos (1.3.1).
