Hi, I have a problem connecting my Windows98 to the Samba server. The Linux computer comes up in the "Network Neighborhood" control panel, but when I double click on the icon, W98 asks for a password for the "\\machine name\IPC$" resource. But my password will not me accepted. I have logged in as user "root" with a given password on both computers. When I set security=share in my [global] section of the /etc/smb.conf file, I can see my shared resources, but, again, my password is not accepted. What is wrong? I am using RedHat version 5.2. > But my password will not me accepted. I have logged in as user "root" > with a given password on both computers. The root account is a bad test account. Many programs (I'm not sure about Samba) will deny access to the root account across the network. This is a security feature. Make up or pick a regular user's account, make sure you're using the same password on the Windows machine as the Linux box, and give that a try. -- Regards, | Why would anyone want to run an operating . | system that is open source and is developed Randy | by hundreds of hackers worldwide? Hi I am having some weird problems with samba. No one sees my box in the network, but i can mount the share i have set up locally and i have the correct ip's in the host allow section. When I do a smbclient my comp doesnt have a master. I have 2 comp, and the one running samba is also running ipmasq so i have configured samba to run on both interfaces: 192.168.0.1/24 x.x.x.x/255.255.252.0. I cant get a nmblookup for any other host than my own, it just states: Sending queries to 0.0.0.0. Hello, I downloaded and installed the Samba 2.0.3 for Sun Solaris 2.5.1 binaries package. Have edited the smb.conf file as per installation instructions. Have checked the smb.conf file using testparm - all okay! Have checked that the smbd and nmbd daemons are running - all okay! Have run smbstatus which indicates everything all okay! Have run smbclient which lists all the services on the Samba server - all okay! On our NT4 clients I can browse the Network Neighbourhood and "see" the Samba server but as soon as I try to view any of the shares by double clicking I get a dialogue box which says: \\Farne is not accessible The network path was not found Can you suggest anything that I could be doing wrong or have not done? Hello, I hope this is the right place to ask samba questions. Our former system manager set up Samba on my Sun workstation so that a couple of NT machines can see my workstation as a network drive. I have a new Windows98 laptop but it does not see the samba server. Do I need to configure something on the Windows98 machine? On the Sun? Thanks, Doug
I thought it might more productive to ask the question here due to the scope of the probable audience. I have installed SAMBA 2.0.5a from an RPM which part of the LINUX/390 2.2.15 maintained at Marist.edu. When I start SAMBA start it says both smbd & nmbd are running ( doing a SAMBA status gives the same thing). However when I bring up SWAT and ask for status it says that both are not running. I can't check with SMBCLIENT because it gives: [root@vmlnx001 /etc]# smbclient -L vmlnx001 Added interface ip=158.82.172.131 bcast=158.82.255.255 nmask=255.255.0.0 error connecting to 158.82.172.131:139 (No buffer space available) Connection to vmlnx001 failed NMBLOOKUP gives a comparable response: [root@vmlnx001 sbin]# nmblookup -B vmlnx001 __SAMBA__ Sending queries to 158.82.172.131 Packet send failed to 158.82.172.131(137) ERRNO=No buffer space available name_query failed to find name __SAMBA__ SWAT can do the configuration part and knows about the lock file so there is connectivity, but it can't do the status portion.>From the diagnostics test,Test 1 Works Test 2 Work Test 3 Fails See above A NETSTAT -a shows the proper listen Both smbd and nmbd are running as deamons verified by a PS. An SMBSTATUS gives the following: [root@vmlnx001 sbin]# smbstatus -L vmlnx001 No locked files Share mode memory usage (bytes): 1048464(99%) free + 56(0%) used + 56(0%) overhead = 1048576(100%) total It would seem that the "No buffer space available" message is the key but right off hand I dont have a way of verifying that or correcting it if it is the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I've configured a LexmarkZ22 properly through unix lpd. I'm trying to share the printer via samba now to my windows 2000 workstations. I've turned on printer sharing in samba and can view the lexmark printer share and connect with it fine. On the client, I install the local printer drivers and use the samba network path. The installation appears to go fine. When I try to print a test page, it bails and says "Test page failed to print, blah blah Cannot create print job". Has anyone seen this error before, can someone help? Thx a lot in advance for your help Cya
Hello ! I have a little network ( 11 pc ) with the latest version of samba (2.2.2 ) on my server. I use it as a PDC. It work fine when i'm connected as an administrator, but, when i'm connected to a simple user on my domain, i cant use a database that is open by an other computer. I think it's a locking problem, but I'm not sure... I checked by swapping pc to that user, but same thing, permissions are 755 on unix. Any body faced this , there is no one to one mapping of her unix directories when browsing in windows explorer. thanks in advance for your comments
Hello I am kinda new to the whole samba and linux platform. Well I have a samba problem. We are using Red Hat 7.3 as our intranet server and we are trying to use samba for rights and security. We want to lock everyone except IT department from accessing files on the intranet server. As of now everyone can get into it. We are trying for a password protected area. Also if we change the security level from share level to anything else, it will not let anyone in, or it will ask for a user name and password that we have no clue which it is. Can anyone help? Thank you.

This is what i did to run a samba file server on linux. I installed liux 8.0 server installation (all packages, selecting security to be medium, no firewalls). After linux was installed i checked samba was already installed along with it. I created user accounts and port them to samba, created smb.conf (and directories to access through samba like public). i understand that linux box is somehow rejecting the connection when windows tries to connect it. But I couldn't find any instructions on how to enable port 137 and 139 for samba. Only thing i find is to run smbd -D and nmbd -D. This is what i see if i run netstat -a. I looked into technical documents and I found this information, regarding my problem with windows machine not connecting to Samba. It says that if I can ping but still not see host port 137 might be blocked either by firewall/router etc. How is it possible to check that I'm not blocking port 137 by firewall? is there any specific places i can look at. I'm sure I never installed nor configure firewall while installing linux (not a good idea, but I did it to see atleast if everything works). Which files in linux I can look for to make sure port 137 is enabled??? It is possible to “ping” the HOST from the client (on port 7; the echo port) but the client is unable to obtain the list of shares on HOST. Cause: Traffic on one or more of the NetBIOS-over-TCP ports (137, 138, 139) are blocked. To verify this, type one of the following commands: (DOS) nbtstat –A ipaddr (where “ipaddr” is numeric) If this command shows a list of NetBIOS names, then port 137 is open. Otherwise, it is blocked. Resolution: Find the router, firewall, switch or other device that is blocking ports 137-139 and reconfigure it. UDP traffic must be permitted on ports 137 and 138, and TCP traffic must be permitted on port 139. _______________________________________________ No banners. No pop-ups. No kidding. Hi there: My problem is (I have asked this question for lots of time but no one can give me the answer): I have a Redhat 7.0 server with Samba 2.0.7-2 ssl. We have upgraded Samba to 2.2.7a by using tar.gz.. Before I upgrade to 2.2.7a, I checked the samba version as below: Samba-2.0.7-2 ssl Samba-common-2.0.7-2 ssl Samba-client-2.0.7-2 ssl Then after I upgraded to Samba 2.2.7a, I check the samba version as below: Samba-2.2.7a (upgrade) Samba-common-2.0.7-2 ssl (still the same) Samba-client-2.0.7-2 ssl (still the same) I supposed that the Samba is upgraded. After 2 weeks, the users reported that they cannot talk with Samba. Also, they told me that someone has been checked with the samba. That's a library has missing. I have no idea why's that since I am a newbie for samba and linux system. BR, Angie

By default routers do not pass broadcast packets, and "browsing" uses broadcast in absence of WINS or DNS server. See docs/textdocs/BROWSING.txt for details.> Does it have to do anything with samba?Enable WINS in Samba (RTFM), and configure 192.168.0.1 as WINS server in all clients. Either manually or via DHCP.
