could someone please give me the lowdown on samba and passwords? i keep trying to connect to any share name on either of my unix boxes, either from each other or from a win95 machine... every time i can't get anything due to passwords... does samba have it's own password file? from trial-and-error it seems that it doesn't read out your /etc/passwd file for user's home dirs... thanks... -E
Hi I'm trying to introduce samba at my school, but I'm having problems. I user samba-1.9.18p10, with Debian 1.3.1 We have some WfW 3.11 clients. The following happens: .) The clients can't connect as a user that hast "" (nothing) as password. This also happend with smbclient as client .) User whos password is longer then 8 characters can't connect with smbclient, if the type in more then 8 characters at the password prompt. If they type only the first 8 charactes, then can connect without a problem. We don't user encrypted password (I guess WfW 3.11 doesn't support them). It looks as if the password-comparing code in 1.9.18p10 is broken - but of course I can be wrong. Greetings from Vienna Florian Pflug
We have 3 samba servers running. I've configured 2 of them to verify passwords through radius (pam, radius-module) from one holding master copies of passwords (in traditional passwd+shadow database). Servers happen to all be in different workgroups, if it is related. What i'm wondering is, why some of the users get asked password 3 times, once for each server (apparently the password is same for all servers). Other users don't, i have been told. What might cause such behaviour? Especially how could i tell the machine that it might use only one password for all the servers. The one who is having problems is running Windows 98 on his machine. PS: I'm currently running one wins-server for several workgroups, is this likely to cause problems (except name conflicts :).
I am trying to login in Windows 98 using plaintext passwords into a Linux samba server. I've already changed the windows registry, and am able to connect for some users. However, with same passwords (the ones with "funny" characters like !"#$%&/()=) or with some upper and lower case mixtures, it just doesn't work! If the user changes its password in the linux box, it all works fine! Can someone help me? -- nneves@di.fc.ul.pt Dept. Informatica, Fac. Ciencias, |\ | |\ | Tel: +351 1 7500058 Univ. hi all I'm still having problems with user's being able to change their passwords (either through telnet + smbpasswd or through the SWAT function). I'm getting the classic "machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the session setup. Error was : ERRSRV - ERRbadpw (Bad password - name/password pair in a tree connect or sesssion setup are invalid). ... the relevant entry in the smb log file is: "[2000/06/02 13:30:44, 1] smbd/reply.c:reply_sesssetup_and_X(988) Username is invalid on this system" my "globals" section of the smb.conf file is: # Global parameters [global] workgroup = LAW netbios name = LAWPC34 server string = Samba 2.0.7-2 interfaces = eth0 encrypt passwords = Yes local master = No wins server = 134.115.4.33 guest account admin users = mcrobert I know it's pretty basic, but I've tried to start afresh to avoid the password problems (ie. I've upgraded to ver 2.0.7-2 & completely new smb.conf file). Is there a possibility the problem's caused by bad file permissions/ownership on smb.conf or smbpasswd (more likely the latter)? I've tried adding the following line to "interfaces": [server ip]/22, 127.0.0.1 ... as opposed to 'eth0'. The /22 represents netmask of 255.255.252.0. any help/mindblowing solutions are welcome .... thanks Andrew ------------------------------------------------- Andrew McRobert LLB B.Sc(Comp. How does one change passwords in Windows to get the system to let you map drives. Right now it asks me for a password nad while I have only ever used/set one password, it doesn't know the one I enter. Where is it that this is changed or added? I know about the place in control panel but that is for 'windows', which sounds general. I need to change it for the NET. --- Ted Gervais 1-902-679-2253 Coldbrook, Nova Scotia Canada.
I am trying to set up a simple network between my linux machine and win98 machine for file and print sharing. I installed samba and can see the linux machine in win98 network neighborhood. The problem is that it asks for a password when I try to access the linux machine from win98. Since this is just being used at my home I was hoping to set it up to not require a password. I can't figure out what password it's looking for. I logged on to win98 with user id of nobody and did not enter a password when logging on win98. Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated. I am new to linux, so if I left out information needed to help with this problem, I apologize.
I'm running the version of Samba that came with my Linux Mandrake 7.2. (I think it's 2.1.4) My problem is that I can log onto SWAT as any user but root. Any clue as to what might be wrong? THX in advance
Hi! I made a C script to work with an html form to allow my users to change their passwords. Since they use ftp and samba, i've tried to execute smbpasswd and with password sync in smb.conf it should work well. The problem is that smbpasswd must have setuid set and it doesn't run like this. Any ideas to turn this around? Thanks in advance. M?rio Gamito pt is for Portugal
I'm trying ot upgrade samba 2.0.7 to 2.2.0-alpha2 and when I run it and try to authenticate, I get this error [2001/02/01 19:58:35, 1] smbd/password.c:pass_check_smb(544) Account for user 'poseiden' was disabled. Hi I would like to not have to setup all the NT users on my network with mirrored names and passwords on our SUN SOLARIS 2.7 machine. There would appear to be a way of doing this but nothing seems to work. I understand that I would have to setup a guest account on the UNIX machine, but when I try this, and try to map a UNIX dry from WINDOWS explorer, I am asked for the password. I am using WIN95. Any pointers would be appreciated. Regards David Allan ******************************************** The information contained in this e-mail may be privileged and/or confidential. What I had to do is make SAMBA the PDC and have my nt server a MEMBER server joined to the domain. All my users exist on the samba machine and apparently when I try to connect to shares on the nt server it looks up my password on the unix server ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Allan" <dallan@thecis.co.uk> To: "SAMBA Users (E-mail)" <samba@lists.samba.org> Sent: Friday, February 02, 2001 10:22 AM Subject: Passwords> Hi > > I would like to not have to setup all the NT users on my network with > mirrored names and passwords on our SUN SOLARIS 2.7 machine.
