I'm having problems with the username map feature of Samba. Everything was running fine in 1.9.18p7. After the upgrade to 1.9.18p8, the mapping no longer occurs, and I see errors in the log file: password server CSUNTS rejected the password get_smbpwd_entry: unable to open file /usr/local/samba/private/smbpasswd I tried going back to 1.9.18p7, and sure enough things work like a charm. I upped the debug level in smb.conf, tried 1.9.18p8 again, and here are some more details from the log file: connected to password server CSUNTS got session password server OK using password server validation Selected protocol NT LM 0.12 1998/07/29 13:52:14 Transaction 2 of length 154 switch message SMBsesssetupX (pid 46216) Domain=[CSUDOM] NativeOS=[Windows 4.0] NativeLanMan=[Windows 4.0] sesssetupX:name=[JHUNT] Mapped user jhunt to jackie password server CSUNTS rejected the password get_smbpwd_entry: unable to open file /usr/local/samba/private/smbpasswd Couldn't find user jackie in smb_passwd file. 1998/07/29 13:52:20 error packet at line 633 cmd=115 (SMBsesssetupX) eclass=2 ec ode=2 error string = No such file or directory I'm guessing here....but it looks like to me the mapping is being done BEFORE the password is validated with the password server. But according to the smb.conf man page in the username map section: "The only exception to this is the username passed to the "password server" (if you have one). The password server will receive whatever username the client supplied without modification." Any help would be greatly appreciated!
