Wine (20000213-1) has apparently trashed my win98. Many files seemed to have been moved to directories named !$!$!$!$.*. Windows starts, but almost nothing works since programs have been moved to these to these directories. Any help in fixing the situation will be greatly appreciated. This is on RedHat 6.2 (2.2.14). winecheck gives This script verifies the configuration of the whole Wine environment. Note that this is an ALPHA version, and thus it doesn't catch all problems ! The results of the checks are printed on the right side: OK - test passed without problems. SUSPICIOUS - potentially problematic. You might want to look into that. BAD - This is a problem, and it leads to configuration score penalty. CRITICAL - A critical problem which can easily lead to malfunction. FAILED - This problem leads to Wine failure almost certainly. The result will be printed as a percentage score indicating config completeness. --------------------------- checking Wine base files --------------------------- 001. Checking for file "wine"... OK. 002. Checking for correct .so lib config (please wait)... OK. ----------------------------- checking config file ----------------------------- 003. Checking config file access... Read on closed filehandle <CFGFILE> at winecheck line 457. FAILED (/home/walt/.wine/config does not exist). - ADVICE: it is ok in case you have ~/.winerc. If you don''t, then you''re in trouble !. --------------------- checking system devices used by Wine --------------------- 004. Checking sound device /dev/dsp... OK. 005. Checking audio mixer device /dev/mixer... OK. 006. Checking MIDI sequencer device /dev/sequencer... BAD (no kernel driver for /dev/sequencer?). - ADVICE: module loading problems ? Read /usr/src/linux/Documentation/modules.txt. 007. Checking device needed for DGA (option "UseDGA"): /dev/BAD (/dev/mem is not readable for you). - ADVICE: Use chmod as root to fix it ("man chmod"). ----------------------- checking registry configuration ------------------------ 008. Checking availability of winedefault.reg entries... CRITICAL (entry "SHAREDMEMLOCATION" not found). - ADVICE: file winedefault.reg doesn't seem to have been applied using regapi. 009. Checking availability of windows registry entries... CRITICAL (entry "Default Taskbar" not found). - ADVICE: Windows registry does not seem to be added to Wine. This can affect many newer programs. 9 tests. 0 suspicious, 2 bad, 2 critical, 1 failed. This problem has prompted the following part of the README : You should backup all your important files that you give Wine access to, or use a special Wine copy of them, as there have been some cases of users reporting file corruption. Do NOT run Explorer, for instance, if you don't have a proper backup, as it renames/cripples several directories sometimes. So if you want to run Explorer or Internet explorer for example, mount your fat partition read only. Gerard
The same thing happened to me. Morale of the story is that for now you should mount your DOS/Windows partition read-only. -- Nigel Horne. Arranger, Composer, Conductor, Typesetter. Owner of the brass band group of the Internet. ICQ#20252325 njh@bandsman.co.uk http://www.bandsman.co.uk/music.htm
This problem happens when you run Internet Explorer using wine. I think it renames directories temporarily but if wine crashes you are left with the renamed directories. -----Original Message----- From: g.patel@wanadoo.fr <g.patel@wanadoo.fr> Newsgroups: comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine To: wine-users@winehq.com <wine-users@winehq.com> Date: Wednesday, May 23, 2001 12:21 AM Subject: Re: win98 trashed & !$!$ files>On 22 May 2001 15:56:05 GMT, Walter Polkosnik ><walt@sal.physics.ucsb.edu> wrote: > >> >>Wine (20000213-1) has apparently trashed my win98. I'm sure it was internet explorer that I fooled with. No real need to run either one however, since linux already has adequate substitutes. It didn't really trash anything, just knocked the icons off the desktop by renaming the directories. -----Original Message----- From: Francois Gouget <fgouget@free.fr> To: wine-users@winehq.com <wine-users@winehq.com> Date: Wednesday, May 23, 2001 11:55 AM Subject: Re: win98 trashed & !$!$ files>On Wed, 23 May 2001, pablito wrote: > >> This problem happens when you run Internet Explorer using wine.
