wine users - Mar 2007 - wineconsole crashes - what am I doing wrong?

Dear All,
I am running Wine under Linux - Suse 10.1 (kernel 2.6.16).  GUI apps work
fine (eg "wine notepad", "wine matlab") and wcmd works too
("wine wcmd"),
but any CUI program causes a crash, like this:

/home/gcunning> wineconsole --backend=user "c:freedos\edit.com"
Warning: unprotecting memory to allow real-mode calls.
         NULL pointer accesses will no longer be caught.
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00004f20 at address 0x401e39df
(thread 000e), starting debugger...

Things I have tried:
1. I read the instructions
2. I upgraded Wine to the latest version (9.32) - no change
3. I moved the executables to a Win 95 partition and tried to run them from
there - still no change
4. I rebooted the machine into Windows95 and tested the executables from
there - everything worked.

I can't believe this is a major bug, but on the other hand I can't think
of
anything else to try!  All ideas gratefully received.

This is due to the fact edit.com is a DOS app.
Better use its windows port, downloadable at
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=188409

I already tested it under wine 0.9.32, it works in a reliable manner.
