Oh yea, there is a question that is begging to be asked - why not just 
compile in the bash variable parsing functions? There may be good reasons 
not to do this, but if it is reasonable there will be no end to the uses.

Well, for one, it's GPL, which would interfere in dual-licensing the
Asterisk code.  If there's an equivalent under the BSD license, it
might be considered.
