[syslinux] Chaining from PXELinux to some other boot loader
Hi I am using PXELinux to boot BartPE and some other application and it works fine. There are some other Boot application which I am using 3COM MBAUTIL PXE.mnu and floppy images. I have problem chaining from pxelinux.0 to 3com pxe.0 (pxe.mnu). Consider: BIOS->(DHCP-TFTP)->pxelinux.0 works fine. BIOS->(DHCP-TFTP)->3COM pxe.mnu works fine, the menu appears and I can choose a floppy image. BIOS->(DHCP-TFTP)->pxelinix.0->(choose from menu, KERNEL pxe.0 APPEND keeppxe)->3COM pxe.mnu has some problem. The initial 3COM menu appears but when I choose a floppy image it hangs. I have said about this problem before and I am sorry that I insist but I think there is some problem in pxelinux.0 which if solved maybe other problem in chaining other kernels may clear too. The problem may be like: 1) KeepPXE is not working fine 2) PXELinux.0 is loaded in a memory offset, the it loads the other kernel (3com pxe.mnu) in another memory location and 3COM pxe.mny maybe memory location dependant. Is there any way to replace pxelinux.0 by pxe.mnu in the memory as if pxe.mnu is loaded in the first step? Behrad

The boot image editor utility can be used to chain PXELINUX.0 from its *.PXE images, which might work for you. In other words, you could boot pxe.0, and then chain to pxelinux.0 Steve Marfisi emBoot Inc. -----Original Message----- From: syslinux-request at zytor.com [mailto:syslinux-request at zytor.com] Sent: Monday, November 27, 2006 3:00 PM To: syslinux at zytor.com Subject: SYSLINUX Digest, Vol 44, Issue 24 Send SYSLINUX mailing list submissions to syslinux at zytor.com To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://www.zytor.com/mailman/listinfo/syslinux or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to syslinux-request at zytor.com You can reach the person managing the list at syslinux-owner at zytor.com When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of SYSLINUX digest..." BIOS->(DHCP-TFTP)->pxelinix.0->(choose from menu, KERNEL pxe.0 APPEND keeppxe)->3COM pxe.mnu has some problem. There are a few reasons, maybe there are solutions too: When you load a floppy disk image (DOS), you have a few utilities, which makes it possible to do Pre-OS tasks. I couldn't find any solution by MemDisk DOS floppy images: 1) PBOOT.exe: to continue booting to local disk from DOS (as a Pre-OS) 2) BPPatch.exe: make it possible to patch a text file (a DOS Batch file) by DHCP and PXE environmental parameters. 3) PXE and UNDI stacks are available in DOS and so you can use UNDI NDIS drivers and also tftp through PXE stack. It seems that it is not available in Memdisk loaded floppies. PBOOT V2.01 - Pre-OS Local-Boot Utility Copyright (c) 3Com Corporation 1998-2000. All rights reserved. Thanks for your help, two questions: 1) Have you tried chaining to PXELinux.0 from emboot mba.pxe file (created by emboot ImgEdit)? I did this but I think PBOOT and BPPatch look for some Pre-OS functions of PXE otherwise they would give an error. -----Original Message----- From: H. [syslinux] Chaining from PXELinux to some other boot loader
Thanks for your help. I tested it: 1) embootPXE.0 CAN chain to pxelinux.0 (3com couldn't). 2) pxelinux.0 CAN NOT chain to embootPXE.0. The menu appears but if you choose a floppy image the system hangs. I think this is the same problem in pxelinux, I encountered over 3COM MBAUTIL. [syslinux] Chaining from PXELinux to some other boot loader
BPPATCH is something different. It run on DOS and patch a file with DHCP, PXE variables. You create a batch file like this: @ECHO OFF SET BPPcha=#@cha########################## SET BPPsip=#@sip########################## And RUN BPPatch File.bat and this converts to something like: @ECHO OFF SET BPPcha=000a0b0c0d0e SET BPPsip=192.168.80.1 These are variables available in BPPatch: 6.1 Adapter-Specific Information Tag Field Name Description ---- ----------- ----------- #@iop# Adapter I/O address The I/O address that the 3Com Managed PC Boot Agent used to access the network adapter card. #@shm# Adapter memory address The network adapter RAM address used by the 3Com Managed PC Boot Agent (not used on all network adapter cards). #@typ# 3Com MBA type code The 3Com Managed PC Boot Agent type code for the network adapter card (see the 3Com Managed PC Boot Agent User Guide for a list of type codes). 6.2 BOOTP RFC951 Fields Tag Field Name Description ---- ----------- ----------- #@bfn# Boot file name The name of the boot image file that was initially downloaded by the ROM. #@cha# Client hardware address The Ethernet hardware address for the network adapter card. #@gip# Gateway IP address #@shn# Server host name #@sip# Server IP address #@yip# "Your" IP address The BOOTPTAB ip= field value. 6.3 RFC1048 Vendor Fields In addition to the regular Carnegie Mellon University tags, in BOOTP (rather than with DHCP server) environments, BPPATCH supports custom RFC1048 user-defined fields (tag numbers 128-254). To specify a user-defined field within the boot image file, use the tag "#@t" followed by the field number. For example, to specify user-defined field 129, the tag would be "#@t129####". In the BOOTPTAB file, user-defined field 129 would have the tag "t129=", followed by the appropriate value in quotations and a colon (for example, t129="ELNK3":). Tag Field Name Description ---- ----------- ----------- #@smf# Subnet mask field The BOOTPTAB sm= field value. #@tof# Time offset field The BOOTPTAB to= field value. #@chn# Client host name field The full name of the host, including both the host and domain names. This computer name is specified in the first field of the BOOTPTAB file. #@cno# Client host name only The host name only, as specified in the first field of the BOOTPTAB file. #@cdo# Client domain name only The domain name only, as specified in the first field of the BOOTPTAB file. #@gw?# Gateway IP address* The BOOTPTAB gw= field value. #@ts?# Time server IP address* The BOOTPTAB ts= field value. #@ns?# Name server IP address* The BOOTPTAB ns= field value. #@ds?# Domain name server IP* The BOOTPTAB ds= field value. #@lg?# Log server IP address* The BOOTPTAB lg= field value. #@cs?# Cookie server IP* The BOOTPTAB cs= field value. #@lp?# LRP server IP address* The BOOTPTAB lp= field value. #@im?# Impress server IP* The BOOTPTAB im= field value. #@rl?# RLP server IP address* The BOOTPTAB rl= field value. #@txxx# User-defined number xxx The RFC1048 custom vendor tag and value can range from 128-254.
