There are some Perl scripts involved currently, but the real work is
done in C++, so Perl skills aren't vital, just a bonus.

I guess the overall vision is simply to make the search better.
The entry in the ideas list has the things that I could think of which
would be useful enhancements, but there are undoubtedly others too.
Some of the improvements may need tweaks which can get fed back to
Xapian, but I wouldn't worry too much about trying to quantify benefit
to Xapian when putting your proposal together. Gmane's search has
served as a good demo of what Xapian can do, and continues to do so, so
improving it in general will indirectly benefit Xapian.
