zfs code - Sep 2007 - Moving from snv_68 to snv_72 – VERSIONNAME Undefined

I am using one machine to build, test and occasionally modify the ON
Consolidation. I first installed the Community Edition. I then downloaded the
snv_68 tarballs which I successfully built, BFU-ed, and installed. I then
modified snv_68 and successfully built, BFU-ed, and installed again.

I now want to move on to snv_72. I downloaded the 72 version of the source
(on-src.tar.bz2) and closed bins (on-closed-bins.i386.tar.bz2), however, I am
unable to build snv_72 successfully. I get the following kinds of messages in
?Build noise differences (DEBUG)?:

< "../common/Version.c", line 20: undefined symbol: VERSIONNAME
< dmake: Warning: Don''t know how to make target
`/export/home/jduff/per_72_orig/proto/root_i386/usr/lib/font/devpost/HI''

etc.

I can solve the missing devpost files by simply using the ones from snv_68.
However, the VERSIONNAME issue is a concern.

I did NOT install the 72 version of build tools (SUNWonbld.i386.tar.bz2) because
I had BFU-ed the system for snv_68, and I can no longer install packages.

I have lots of questions:

(1) Are the build noise differences something to worry about?

(2) Do build noise differences have anything to do with using the debug version
of the closed bins rather than the non-debug version?

(2) Would the build noise differences be eliminated if I could use the 72 build
tools?

(3) Can I get the 72 build tools via extraction rather than a package
installation?

(4) Do I have to wipe the system clean, reinstall the Community Edition, and
then build 72?
