[Xen-devel] XEN) vmx.c:2652:d1 Bad vmexit (reason 31) with Xen 4.0.1-rc7-pre (cs/ 23029)
I''ve been hitting this only on my Intel boxes. And only on the Nehelem ones. The older Core2Duo don''t seem to encounter this. The guest config is quite simple: kernel = "/usr/lib/xen/boot/hvmloader" builder=''hvm'' memory=1024 #maxmem=1024 maxvcpus = 4 serial=''pty'' vcpus = 2 disk = [ ''file:/mnt/lab/latest/root_image.iso,hdc:cdrom,r''] boot="dn" vif = [ ''type=ioemu,model=e1000,mac=00:0F:4B:00:00:71, bridge=switch'' ] vfb = [ ''vnc=1, vnclisten=0.0.0.0,vncunused=1''] And this is what shows up after I do ''xm create hvm.xm'' (or xl create hvm.xm). alloc irq_desc for 4223 on node -1 alloc kstat_irqs on node -1 (XEN) vmx.c:2652:d1 Bad vmexit (reason 31) (XEN) domain_crash called from vmx.c:2653 (XEN) Domain 1 (vcpu#0) crashed on cpu#0: (XEN) ----[ Xen-4.1.0-rc7-pre x86_64 debug=y Not tainted ]---- (XEN) CPU: 0 (XEN) RIP: 0000:[<0000000000000000>] (XEN) RFLAGS: 0000000000010002 CONTEXT: hvm guest (XEN) rax: 0000000000000001 rbx: 0000000000000000 rcx: 0000000000000000 (XEN) rdx: 0000000000000000 rsi: 0000000000000000 rdi: 0000000000000000 (XEN) rbp: 0000000000000000 rsp: 0000000000000000 r8: 0000000000000000 (XEN) r9: 0000000000000000 r10: 0000000000000000 r11: 0000000000000000 (XEN) r12: 0000000000000000 r13: 0000000000000000 r14: 0000000000000000 (XEN) r15: 0000000000000000 cr0: 0000000000000011 cr4: 0000000000000000 (XEN) cr3: 0000000000000000 cr2: 0000000000000000 (XEN) ds: 0000 es: 0000 fs: 0000 gs: 0000 ss: 0000 cs: 0000 switch: port 2(tap1.0) entering disabled state switch: port 2(tap1.0) entering disabled state The Dom0 is 2.6.32.32 + for-2.6.32/bug-fixes, but the bug-fixes branch has only bootup fixes so it should not affect this. If I try the same exact guest configuration on a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33GHz It works without trouble. I don''t see how that error can ever be printed for that exit reason. Could you do a bit of digging and see if you agree? The logic is straightforward enough -- the error comes from a default case in a switch statement, but the switch does explicitly handle EXIT_REASON_MSR_READ. There is also a exit_and_crash label for the default case, but EXIT_REASON_MSR_READ doesn''t goto it afaics. So this is a weird and inexplicable bug, to me. :-) -- Keir _______________________________________________ Xen-devel mailing list Xen-devel@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-devel

Interestingly enough - both of them are Intel and one of them is Nehelem, the other is a Gulftown (I think). Let me double check that 4.0 did work on them for HVM guests. There is also this that shows up as the guest is being created: (XEN) [VT-D]iommu.c:1785: VT-d page table not sharing with EPT table which I think is OK as the IOMMU is definitly turned off on one of the machines.> default case in a switch statement, but the switch does explicitly handle > EXIT_REASON_MSR_READ. But the mere register state is insufficient to determine what''s wrong. My question is have other people have been testing machines with Intel VT-d? I suppose this is 2nd generation VT-d, so it might require some more newer ones. This specific hardware is http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=DX58SO Ian, does your test-suite include this Intel DX58SO type-ish hardware? And sure enough - the machine is an Intel SDP, and I can''t seem to be able to update the BIOS. Right now it tells me it has: /DX58SO, BIOS SOX5810J.86A.1171.2008.0717.0926 07/17/2008 So I am going to blame it on the hardware. However, I noticed that I should be able to turn this patch by doing: ''sharept=0'' flag but that actually does not seem to turn this functionality off. So maybe the hardware is OK? _______________________________________________ Xen-devel mailing list Xen-devel@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-devel

Konrad, I believe sharept=0 is the default. If it is set to sharept=1, the code is enabled only on the systems that has compatible EPT and VT-d page table format. There is no such hardware on the market yet. What type of NHM SDP do you have? Is it a HEDT (High End Desktop) with a add-on graphics card? I have been using a Westmere EP system (NHM architecture generation) and have not seen this problem. I also have ready access to Ironlake SDP''s I can test on if you see the same problem on Ironlake (i.e. core i5) systems. Do you see the same problem if you do iommu=0 in the grub? Let me try ''iommu=0'' just to make sure. _______________________________________________ Xen-devel mailing list Xen-devel@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-devel
