Xen devel - Nov 2007 - Kernel seems to crash in a xen environment and using crossover-office/ wine

Hello Listmembers,

iam running Fedora 8 into a Xen Environment. My Kernel on the domU is
2.6.21-2950.fc8xen. This domU has 1024M of Ram assigned. When iam
starting the Crossover Installer Wizard and choose Install Internet
Explorer 6 SP1 then the Kernel seems to crash. With the virt-manager i
had taken a Screenshot from the console, he is attached. If iam lowering
the Memory to 512M the Crash comes later in the Setup or using. 
Additionally i found these messages too:

dimensioning. I
dont know why the machine knows that he had 4G of memory at all.

It may well be fixed by xen-unstable changesets 16406, 16407 and 16408.

Hello Keir,

the numbers above a represent what? bugreports? Iam not sure which part
of xen must be replaced. Is it the xen-kernel into my the affected domU?
Possibly that a rpm exits for Fedora Distro?

And how to support the Fedora Development team to integrate the fix?

They are changeset numbers. One of the fixes is to extend the 4gb segment
fixup code to work with a wider range of processor instructions. That looks
to be the issue you are hitting.

I don''t know how easy it would be to try these changes in FC8. If you
can
get the FC8 Xen sources then you could export the patches from the
xen-unstable repo and apply themn to the FC8 tree. Or you could try building
and installing xen-unstable Xen on top of FC8.

These are changeset numbers in the mercurial repository for xen-unstable (a 
changeset is roughly "a patch" from the development history).

If you were to clone a copy of the repository and build it, you could test for 
yourself whether it works.  You''d need to uninstall all the fedora Xen
stuff
first.

If you report the bug (plus how to reproduce) to them and mention those 
changesets in your report then they might be able to backport the fixes, I 
guess...  In which case, it would be helpful to them to know if those patches 
do fix your problem.  It''d be understandable if you didn''t
want to build Xen
yourself, though.

Alternatively, it may well get fixed in a newer release of Fedora when they 
roll in an updated upstream Xen version.

Final thought: if we did verify that those changeset fixed the problem, 
perhaps they could be rolled into a point release of 3.1, then maybe Fedora 
could just pull that in (Keir?  thoughts?)

File a bug report for your problem at bugzilla.redhat.com and mention
the changesets believed to fix it & preferably a way to reproduce the
problem.  It''ll then get on the list of things to add in an update
to Xen in appropriate Fedora releases.

Fedora 7 / 8 are on the 3.1.x series of Xen releases (userspace has just
been updated to the official 3.1.2 release).

Alternatively you could try just extracting the patches Keir suggested and 
applying those to the Fedora tree, I suppose.

You''ll need to make sure you''ve uninstalled your Fedora Xen
before you install
xen-unstable.  You''ll also need to make sure that you uninstall
xen-unstable
before you reinstall Fedora Xen...  xen-unstable installs using a script, not 
a package manager, so you''ll have to be careful (and the
"uninstall" function
is not well tested) to hunt down and remove all the Xen-related stuff when 
you want to move back to Fedora''s packages.  If necessary you can
probably
get rid of all the ones that matter by manual deletion.

File a bug against Fedora Xen regardless, so we know that its a fix we need to
pull into the RPMs we distribute.
