[Xen-devel] Problems booting Domain 0 ES7000 x86_64
All, I am trying to boot 32-bit Xen on an ES7000 x86_64 box. I am running 32 bit Sles9 on the box. Xen boots fine, but Domain 0 shuts down very early in the boot process. I don''t even see a ''Domain 0 crashed on vcpu #0'' type message. All I see is. (XEN) Scrubbing Free RAM: ......................................done. (XEN) *** Serial input -> DOM0 (type ''CTRL-a'' three times to switch input to Xen). (XEN) Domain 0 shutdown: rebooting machine. The machine has 4 Intel Xeon processors with Hyperthreading turned off with 4 GB RAM. I am running the latest Xen from the Unstable tree with the 2.6.12 kernel for Dom0. I have attached the serial output. Any idea how I might go about debugging this problem? RE: [Xen-devel] Problems booting Domain 0 ES7000 x86_64
Ian, EARLY_PRINTK has already been enabled in domain0 .config. I am also wondering why it doesn''t show Domain 0 as having crashed. The earlier times we have had issues with Domain 0 crashing, we have always seen a message from Xen saying ''crashed on cpu #0''. thanks Raj -----Original Message----- From: Ian Pratt [mailto:m+Ian.Pratt@cl.cam.ac.uk] Sent: Monday, July 25, 2005 3:04 PM To: Subrahmanian, Raj; xen-devel@lists.xensource.com Cc: Magolan, John F; Davis, Jason; Vessey, Bruce A; ian.pratt@cl.cam.ac.uk Subject: RE: [Xen-devel] Problems booting Domain 0 ES7000 x86_64> > I am trying to boot 32-bit Xen on an ES7000 x86_64 box. I''d also try renaming xprintk to printk as I haven''t looked at the EARLY_PRINTK code yet. RE: [Xen-devel] Problems booting Domain 0 ES7000 x86_64
I have a problem with symptoms very similar to yours. In my case, turns out that BIOS is reporting the DMI interface address at an address Xen doesn''t like. The sequence of events is as follows: 1) Dom0 dmi_iterate() looks for and finds the _DMI_ marker in the BIOS. The associated DMI address is below 0x8000000 on a machine with 2GB of RAM. 2) Dom0 tries to bt_ioremap() the associated _DMI_ address into Dom0 kernel space. 3) Eventually, Xen interprets this as a guest attempting to map an unallocated RAM page 4) Xen calls domain_crash() on Dom0 My suggestion is to disable DMI in your machine, if possible, and see if that helps. If not, you could try hacking your arch/xen/.../dmi_scan.c to never find the DMI entry point. I''m still working on this problem, since I only puzzled it together late yesterday. Hope this helps. -steve -----Original Message----- From: xen-devel-bounces@lists.xensource.com [mailto:xen-devel-bounces@lists.xensource.com] On Behalf Of Subrahmanian, Raj Sent: Monday, July 25, 2005 11:49 AM To: xen-devel@lists.xensource.com Cc: Magolan, John F; Davis,Jason; Vessey,Bruce A Subject: [Xen-devel] Problems booting Domain 0 ES7000 x86_64 All, I am trying to boot 32-bit Xen on an ES7000 x86_64 box. RE: [Xen-devel] Problems booting Domain 0 ES7000 x86_64
Hi Raj -- You don''t appear to have my DMI problem, although you''re croaking in BIOS related code. There is an interesting comment you should read in arch/xen/i386/kernel/mpparse.c (~line 755) that warns of a BUG() in reserve_bootmem(), which is what''s happening to you. If my line 92 of mm/bootmem.c is the same as yours, then you''re failing the BUG(sidx >eidx) test. But what this means, I can''t say. :^) -steve -----Original Message----- From: Subrahmanian, Raj [mailto:raj.subrahmanian@unisys.com] Sent: Tuesday, July 26, 2005 10:30 AM To: King, Steven R; xen-devel@lists.xensource.com; ian.pratt@cl.cam.ac.uk Cc: Puthiyaparambil, Aravindh; Magolan, John F; Davis, Jason; Vessey, Bruce A Subject: RE: [Xen-devel] Problems booting Domain 0 ES7000 x86_64 Steve, I renamed xprintk to printk in the Dom0 kernel on Ian Pratt''s advice, to see if I could produce more debug output. RE: [Xen-devel] Problems booting Domain 0 ES7000 x86_64
All The best I can tell, this is what''s going on when I try to bring up Dom0. It''s failing on the BUG_ON(sidx>=eidx); test om reserve_bootmem_core in mm/bootmem.c(line 92) {It shows up at line 93 in my code because I have added a printk} That''s happening because the size parameter in the fuction is e811ffd0, which is a really massive number. It''s getting that number from smp_scan_config in arch/xen/i386/kernel/mpparse.c (line 767). //printed in smp_scan_config End=20000000, size=e811ffd0, max_low_pfn=20000, mpf->mpf_physptr=37ee0030 //printed in reserve_bootmem_core Addr=37ee0030, bdata->node_boot_start=0, size=e811ffd0, PAGE_SIZE=4096 sidx=229088, eidx=131072, end=131072 When I was looking at the values in smp_scan_config, I noticed that the mpf->mpf_physptr value is 37ee0030. Isn''t this a bit high? This seems to be the cause of the problems. So, does Xen present Dom0 with an MP table? Is this is low or high memory? Or does Xen just point Dom0 at the system MP table? Looking further up the serial output, I find that Xen found it''s mp_table at 000f8730 (XEN) found SMP MP-table at 000f8730 I have attached the serial output at the end. I am unsure as to how to proceed with the debugging. Any help will be appreciated. thanks Raj //Relevant serial output.. <5>Linux version 2.6.12-xen0 (root@SLES9SP2RC2-Zen) (gcc version 3.3.3 (SuSE Lin ux)) #8 Tue Jul 26 23:23:48 EDT 2005 <6>BIOS-provided physical RAM map: Xen: 0000000000100000 - 0000000020000000 (usable) <5>0MB HIGHMEM available. <5>512MB LOWMEM available.
