It's rarely anything to do with the language, and more the person who
is writing it. If you have actually used Perl or Ruby and found them
to be 2-5 times slower then maybe you should spend as much time with
them as you have with Perl. I bet your Perl code has magically gotten
faster over the time you have been writing it. ;)
Anyway, I think gripes about tools you've never used are a bit off
topic on a search engine mailing list.
