I have Wine version 1.0.0 (I installed it a while ago), which I only recently needed to use. The first thing I did was try to put a DLL into the system folder. But when I clicked on "Brose C:\ Drive" nothing happened, so I tried clicking on "Configure Wine", and this time, the monitor blinked a few times and went back to the login screen. After that, I could browse the C;\ drive, but if I ever try to run any application (including notepad) the same thing happens - the monitor blinks for a few seconds, then it goes back to the login screen for Ubuntu. I haven't found the solution anywhere, and I really have no idea what I'm doing, so can anyone help?

Second, the problem you describe (being thrown back to the login screen) is X restarting, which is usually caused by buggy graphics drivers. It is a problem with your system, not Wine per se. Ask on the Ubuntu forum what to do about it.

According to the FAQ: "It's often a graphics driver problem, in which case non-wine apps might also be affected. If running glxgears also crashes, it's definitely a graphics driver problem. The most common cause is upgrading to a new kernel without also updating the nvidia drivers to match. Try reinstalling your graphics drivers." Running glxgears runs fine, and I've never had any trouble with graphics. And I'm not sure how to upgrade, since I installed wine with a package and did not build it. I don't know how to build it.
