Running Codeweavers Preview 3 over Helix, X4, & kernel 2.4.2. (from RPM) Notepad & sol run fine, but when I try to install a program like Netscape (just testing) I get "Setup has detected that UnInstallshield is in use" plus the following error: Invoking /opt/wine/bin/wine.bin cc32d475.exe ... fixme:pthread_kill_other_threads_np err:win32:fixup_imports No implementation for shlwapi.dll.0(StrRetToBufA) imported from shell32.dll, setting to 0xdeadbeef err:win32:fixup_imports No implementation for shlwapi.dll.0(StrRetToBufW) imported from shell32.dll, setting to 0xdeadbeef Wine exited with a successful status Winedbg symlink is set simply to 'wine', and thus is broken. Adding -debug in and around the invoking line doesn't work. I'm using as drive C, /usr/share/wine-c & have copied an actual Win98 Windows dir there. System dir does have shell32 & shlwapi. But I found in config that shell & shell32 are in Exceptions, set to 'internal', not native, so commented that out. No exception is made for shlwapi, so presume it defaults to native, as set earlier in config. Also found in winelauncher, exec dir was set for some reason to /tmp/??/Codeweavers-etc, so set that to /opt/wine. And found /opt/wine/lib wasn't getting lded so fixed that. All Win install progs fail slightly differently, but include the above. Read all 943 messages in newsgroup and read User & Reference Guides & no reference to this. And IRC channel is dead... Good news!. Figured it out. Problem was actually Winders. I am using .dlls from the very first retail release of Win98. When I installed the servicepack, Wine then ran great. Still have these questions though: Would like a common Wine config for all users, so copied config to /etc/wine.conf, then removed all but the first line from users' config, but when I tried to run something it complains of invalid config file. What is the proper way to make common settings & common installs for all users, for easy administration? And, winedbg symlink is broken. Is this just an artifact, or can I fix it? I am hearing that in order to deinstall a Winders program, you must compile a certain app from the sources. Can anyone provide detail? I chose Desktop mode, as I need two apps running simultaneously. Freedom, which is my privacy app and netscape-mail must run together, as mail is fetched through Freedom. Is this possible? Installing Freedom for Win98 fails, saying 'this is for Win98 & you're not running it'. A free DL can be had here: http://www.freedom.net/download/index.html?Session=5da7c4d519fdd36cac53ebaf903bd928 (Freedom has a Linux version, but the best it can do is kernel 2.2 -- I am running 2.4.2 -RH7.1- with Helix & Nautilus) How could I make this work? Should there be a taskbar on the desktop? If so, how would I enable? -- Thanks, C. To fix this try adding the following line in your config file: "shlwapi" = "builtin, native" Note, Google is quite nice for debuggin such things. Just search for the message Wine gave you, here a search on 'shlwapi.dll.0(StrRetToBufW) imported from shell32.dll' gives exactly two answers: http://www.google.com/search?q=shlwapi.dll.0%28StrRetToBufA%29+imported+from+shell32.dll -- Fran?ois Gouget fgouget@codeweavers.com

If an app is installed for root, wouldn't it also be installed for a user? Maybe the problem is the registry files. Can I symlink a user's registry files to root's?
