I didn't read the article yet, but any report on the performance? This is a great way to extend support to previously locked-out systems.

Sadly, VLC isn't legally distributable in many countries such as the United States due to software patents. It would be great to get Theora & Vorbis on the iPhone without resorting to FFMPEG-based apps.
