[syslinux] Is it possible to use PXELinux/SYSLinux with out changing DHCP Server settings ?
Hi, We have some 100 Servers (includes both Intel and PPC based systems). Is there any way to easly install OS (different flavours of Linux) on these systems ? We do not have control over the DHCP Server settings so is there any way to do this with out touching the DHCP Server ? We have static IPs for all the systems. You could use syslinux, but pxelinux isn't going to get you anywhere without DHCP. The Redhat boot floppies/CDROM use syslinux/isolinux. Quite a few other distributions use these as well. Of course you could always set up your own DHCP server and only have reservations based on the MAC addresses of those 100 servers. James S. If you run the PXE daemon that is bundled with most RedHat and Fedora distros, you don't need to touch your DHCP server. However, you probably won't need to use pxelinux in such setting. I haven't played with Linux PXE daemon is a couple of years so I can offer any additional information. You could try setting up a standalone PXE server. Some Linux distros have a package for the one from Intel. The configuration file (equivalent of syslinux.cfg -- see the SYSLINUX FAQ for the options here) will live in this directory. Because more than one system may be booted from the same server, the configuration file name depends on the IP address of the booting machine. PXELINUX will search for its config file on the boot server in the following way: First, it will search for the config file using its own IP address in upper case hexadecimal, e.g. 192.0.2.91 -> C000025B (you can use the included progam gethostip to compute the hexadecimal IP address for any host.)
