Bind Variables in Active Record
OK, I have some basic functionality to support bind variables, it
appears to work with the ''old'' %s style too.
I''ve altered sanitize_conditions in
activerecord/lib/active_record/base.rb to check whether bind variables
are in the statement (/\?/). If they are, replace all the ?s to
escaped values from the arguments array. else santize and expand.

Net::STMP FatalError
I have a module that sends email to the members that have subscribed to
my site.
When it runs through and sends them all emails, it crashes with certain
emails with:
550 <email-x+rxnKfQbAxWk0Htik3J/w@public.gmane.org>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in
virtual alias table
This is on the other end right? And even so, is there a way to suppress
it?

find_by_sql ON STEROID possible?
find_by_sql BREAKS THE OOP BEAUTY and perhaps we can solve that.
NAMING CONVENTIONS can perhaps make find_by_sql much more clever.
lets imagine that relation:
publishers <- books <-> authors_books <-> authors -> universities (can''t find
something else than university for that last association :) )
imagine we want to fetch every book and every associated

caches_page problem
I''m currently caches_page the show method in my Image controller. The
show method looks at @params[''id''] to determine what output should be
generated.
The first time I access the method, say with
http://localhost/public/image/show/1.jpg, the appropriate directories
get created in /public (i.e. public/image/show/1.jpg). However, when

Unit testing + instance variables
After *much* digging and playing around, I finally figured out how to
unit test instance variables that are created by actions. It was
more difficult than I expected. It seems like there should have been
a more straight forward way to do this. Can someone enlighten me? A
simplified and somewhat contrived example of what I am current doing:
Thanks.

SingleTableInheritance Considered Harmful
Here''s the text of a quick note I''ve added to the Inheritance wiki page.
I''m actually proposing that it would be a good idea to drop automatic
single table inheritance and force people to declare it explicitly.
There are two reasons for this:
1. Implicitly doing it unnecessarially limits your use of
inheritance where you really need it: in your object-oriented

Any way to pass state to a component?
I am trying set up a rails app that utilizes components. I need to be
able to pass some state (a bunch of name value pairs) from the Main
controller to the component.
Is there any way to pass this state info using render_component?

Schemas and Migrations
Hello-
I''m new to the ruby-based schemas and migrations. As I''m looking over
examples and such online, I see that many of them don''t make use of
schema-enforced attributes. For example, instead of:
t.column "post_id", :integer, :default => 0, :null => false
They do:
t.column "post_id", :integer
So I''m wondering -- is this

Instiki 0.9.2
Instiki 0.9.2 has arrived.

* Instiki is distributed as a gem (experimental)
* New maintainer (yours truly)
* Assorted other minor changes

Use of concrete rails version per application
Hi all,
I''ve more than one rails based applications on my machine. When I
upgrade my gems (including rails), I usually have to upgrade each
application to be able to continue developing/using it...
But some of these web applications don''t need to be up to date. I would
be happy enough with older version of rails for these applications (, or
I don''t have time to fix

gem rails 1.1.0.200411231446 flags has_many error
Hi
I updated gem rails today and saw that rails had an update.
With the new edition, I get a warning statement printed
that was not in the two earlier versions.
(No message with either:
require_gem ''activerecord'', "= 1.0.0"
require_gem ''activerecord'', "= 1.0.0.20041114"
)
The code still works, but the warning makes no sense.

View source after AJAX update?
Does anyone know how to view the new source in IE after an AJAX update? When I "view -> source" I get the original page source, not the page source as updated.
Thanks in advance,
Bill

Rails 1.1.1: Fixing a slew of minors (but you must still freeze Typo)
Rails 1.1 was a big upgrade with a lot of new features and we''ve been
working hard since its release to polish off the kinks revealed after
it was deployed to the masses. Rails 1.1.1 contains fixes for things
like Prototype memory leaks in IE 6, Oracle adapter runnings, and a
number of compatibility tweaks to make most older applications work.
This release still doesn''t work

Rails 0.8: Just shy of 100 additions, changes, tweaks, and fixes!
It''s been fifty days since our last confession, so it''s no wonder that
this outpouring is by far the biggest yet in Rails history. It''s
absolutely packed with goodies ranging from a whole new framework for
sending email to the smallest new alias for an existing method. In
total we''re just shy of 100 additions, changes, tweaks, and fixes.

Hosting images : DB or File System
Hi,
I''m developing an application where I''ll have to store a lot of images
coming from the users. And I''m still not sure if I should store them
in MySQl as blob or just store them on filesystem.
If I store them on filesystem, how to scale when I''ll have to have
multiple servers ?
Thanks,

fixture problem, TypeError: nil is not a symbol
When I run rake against Rails 8.5 to test unaltered model tests with
yaml fixtures I get the error and stack trace reproduced below for every
one of my model objects. Has anyone seen something this before? Any idea
what could be going on here?
The following ruby-talk thread may or may not be relevant:

Patch Cycle
Hello,
I submitted a patch <http://dev.rubyonrails.org/ticket/3287> (
http://dev.rubyonrails.org/ticket/3287) a couple of days ago. The patch adds
some methods into and changes the existing methods in the CaptureHelper
module. It should not, as I can see, affect any existing Rails
implementations.
I added the relevant unit tests and all but one of the tests pass. The test
that fails failed

Testing against 1.8.4
So apparently 1.8.4 is soon forthcoming. We need testing against it.
Could someone help out with that? I believe Ara already checked into
some of the issues, do you know if those are resolved, Ara?
