Dear List, No doubt I am going around this the wrong way, and hopefully one of you will be able to tell me how to go about it the right way. I want to change the names of an object inside a function and have it stay changed in the global environment. I can only effect the change inside the function as follows ... >

Packages built before R 2.10.0
Dear list, I am running R2.11.1 on 32 bit windows. I am receiving messages as follows ... > require(car) Loading required package: car Error: package 'car' was built before R 2.10.0: please re-install it The package kohonen was another example. This failure appears to be fatal and not only affects the package concerned, but also all its dependents. Is there anything I can do at my

Using Rscript
Dear List, Hopefully someone will point me to a piece of documentation that I have overlooked. I am running Rscript successfully to read and execute an R program, but have failed to find the correct syntax to route the output to a file using the Rscript command that invokes the job. I tried Rscript -e 'sink("outputfile")' script.R , but it then ignored the scriptfile. I know

Coercing a list of variables in a function call
This is hopefully a trivial problem for list subscribers, but I am very new to writing R functions. I wish to call an R function written by myself from another program to fit a model. I need to tell it which of the independent variables are factors. I need to do this in a generic way, so that when the list is passed, R will work through the variables in the data frame and coerce them into being

Extracting the name of an object into a character string
Dear List, I am writing a function in R with the facility to store models for later use in scoring. It would be very useful if I could include in the name of the file stored the name of the model object being stored, this name being chosen by the user in the function call. A simple function to store the name of an object as a character string would fit the bill, but I have not found one. name()

Ensembles in cforest
Dear List, I'm trying to find a way to extract the individual conditional inference trees from cforest ( a modelling function in the party package) in a manner analogous to getTree in randomForest and I'm struggling. I can see that the information is held within the ensemble list, but haven't been able to work out how this sequence of nested lists is structured or if any of the items

Queries about step() and stepAIC()
I have been learning how to use these functions and would like to know the following as I have so far been unable to find the answers in the documentation. 1) What stopping rules are used ? 2) Can the stopping rules be changed? 3) Can the results of each step be stored as objects in R and if so how ? 4) Is there a worked example somewhere of using the keep= argument ? Many thanks in

Voicemail SMS Alert - Possible?
I need to be able to send an sms alert to one's mobile/cell phone. For instance, when I receive a voicemail message in my inbox, I also want to be able to get a message on my cell phone alerting me of this e-mail. How possible is this? And if it is, what do I need to do to get the service up and running? Ideas are most welcome. Thanks, Julius.

Passing values to a Partial
Hi, I cannot seem to find out how to pass in a value to a partial. Can anyone help me? What I am doing(in the code below) is calling a function in my controller called setobject. This function just redraws the partial. I want to be able to change the value @objectname, redraw my partial and have it be able to use that value. The first the page is drawn it works, but when i call setobject it

using save() to work with objects that exceed memory capacity
Context: I'm relatively new to R and am working with very large datasets. General problem: If working on a dataset requires that I produce more than two objects of roughly the size of the dataset, R quickly uses up its available memory and slows to a virtual halt. My tentative solution: To save and remove objects as they're created, and load them when I need them. To do this I'm

Using objectname in function
Is there anyway I can convert a vectors objectname to a string to be used in fx: Monkey<-c(0,0,0,1,1,1) Wax<-c(1,0,1,0,1,0) f<-function(x,y){ table(x,y) } f(Monkey,Wax) so that the printout is not y x 0 1 0 1 2 1 2 1 but Wax Monkey 0 1 0 1 2 1 2 1 -- View this message in context:

SpreadLevelPlot for more than one factor
Dear Sir, Many thanks for your reply. I have a query. I have a whole set of distributions which should be made normal / homoscedastic. Take for instance the warpbreaks data set. We have the following boxplots for the warpbreaks dataset: a. boxplot(breaks ~ wool) b. boxplot(breaks ~ tension) c. boxplot(breaks ~ interaction(wool, tension)) d. boxplot(breaks ~ wool @ each level of tension) e.

SpreadLevelPlot for more than one factor
Dear Ashim, I?ll address your questions briefly but they?re really not appropriate for this list, which is for questions about using R, not general statistical questions. (1) The relevant distribution is within cells of the wool x tension cross-classification because it?s the deviations from the cell means that are supposed to be normally distributed with equal variance. In the warpbreaks data

Problem loading data from database
Hello, I get this error trying to load some data from DB. I''m using Rails 1.2.2 on Fedora Core 6 and Sybase adapter. SpreadLevelPlot for more than one factor
Dear All, I want a transformation which will make the spread of the response at all combinations of 2 factors the same. See for example : boxplot(breaks ~ tension * wool, warpbreaks) The closest I can do is : spreadLevelPlot(breaks ~tension , warpbreaks) spreadLevelPlot(breaks ~ wool , warpbreaks) I want to do : spreadLevelPlot(breaks ~tension * wool, warpbreaks) But I get : >

diverting output from nested loops
Dear List, I have a series of nested loops with the structure shown below, and I am struggling to figure out how to divert output to folders created with dir.create() within the loops. What I need is for the output to end up as topNameK/subNameL/objNameM.pdf; what I get instead is a series of directories topNameK/, directories subNameL/, and files objNameM.pdf, all in the working directory. Deleting certain observations (and their imprint?)
I'm manipulating a large dataset and need to eliminate some observations based on specific identifiers. This isn't a problem in and of itself (using which.. or subset..) but an imprint of the deleted observations seem to remain, even though they have 0 observations. This is causing me problems later on. I'll use the dataset warpbreaks to illustrate, I apologize if this isn't in
