R process slow down after a amount of time
Hi R users, I have mentioned that R is getting slower if a process with a loop runs for a while. Is that normal? Let's say, I have a code which produce an output file after one loop run. How to save row values from a matrix into one vector?

problem with while loop with next (was RE: file connection, w hile, readLines and browser)
Dear R-help, I think I have kinda isolated the problem I had to the following: i <- 0 while( {i <- i + 1} < 5) { if(i < 3) next print(i) } This seems to go into an infinite loop. After I break the execution, i has the value 1. At the R prompt, if I start from i <- 0 and keep typing {i <- i + 1} < 5, it eventually evaluate to TRUE. So why does the while loop not work?

Thanks for the quick response Ivan. readLines with encoding='latin1' works for me (on Ubuntu). However I was more concerned with the inconsistency in results between substr and regexpr. I was expecting that if one of them errors because of an unknown encoding then the other should as well. Even better, if regexpr works, why shouldn't substr work as well? Incidentally the analogous

I think the whole premise of this question is flawed. If you want to work with this string as data, then read it in from a separate file using readLines. If it is fixed data that you want to be part of your program, then invest the effort to escape the odd characters and be done with it. Buffering in R 3.5 connections causes incorrect data in readChar
I noticed an issue where readChar does not return the correct value after a call to readline. It appears that readChar is not aware of the buffering, so it reads from the end of the buffer, rather than the current position in the file. This is a significant change of behavior from R-3.4.4.
