deleting variables
How can I automatically exclude one variable from being saved in the
workspace when I quit an R session? The problem is I don't know how to
erase a variable once it has been created.
Background: I open a connection called "con" to a database server in my
~/.Rprofile. Obviously, the connection expires when quitting the R
session. Unfortunately, the workspace is loaded after

Hello,
Hello,
A newbie to R. I am trying to use the exonmap package in R.
According to the docs, the xmapDatabase() command should read the
config file with all the connection parameters and connect to the DB.
But i get the error shown below....

variable as part of file name
Dear all,
sorry for this very basic question, but I did not find any good example yet.
I would like to set up a variable that can be recall later to substitute a
part of a file name.
As example:
var_filename = as.name("aaa")
jpeg("var_filename.jpg")
plot()
dev.off()
It would be very useful in order to avoid to change manually many strings. I
guess it is possible, but I did

Creation of png=problems
Hi everybody,
I am currently working with R and I would like to create jpeg graphs with it.
I am working on Windows and Unix but I would like to be able to create graphs (jpeg, png, bitmap...) under Unix.
I am working on Solaris version 8. The documentation for R states that the latest version of or R known to compile on Solaris 8 is version 2.6.2. I have been able to compile and install R

Subsetting an array by a vector of dimensions
Hi
Is it possible to subset an n-dimensional array by a vector of n dimensions? E.g. assume I have
> x <- array(1:24, dim=2:4)
> x[1,1,2]
[1] 7
> dims <- c(1,1,2)
I would like a function that I can supply x and dims as parameters to, and have it return 7. Also, I would like to do something like:
> x[1,1,]
[1] 1 7 13 19
> dims2<- c(1,1,NA)
And have a function of x and

Solution to problem running R 1.8.1 on Windows XP (PR#7357)
This is a bug apparently caused by Windows XP's interaction with R.
I was getting an error message when running C:\Program
Files\R\rw1081\bin\Rgui.exe. Odly enough, his problem was happening only
when I was not connected to the network using my ethernet connection.
Using Google, I found the same error described on a thread (see attached)

Truncated plots
Hello As a postgrad I have been helping an undergraduate student with R
coding but she has a problem with R studio on her laptop which I can't fix
- basically when she runs a plot it appears without a y axis label with the
black line plot frame hard against the plot window and the bottom of the
plot, where you would expect to see the horizontal axis and the x axis
label etc is completely

List creation based on matrix
Hi guys,
It would be great if you could help me with this one...
I'm looking to create a script to convert a matrix of species abundance e.g:

into two vectors e.g:

ANOVA-like tests of geometrically-distributed data
I have a statistical problem which has given me no end of grief recently,
and am posting here in the hope that somebody can give me a straight
answer. I'm a IT postgrad, not a statistician, so people may have to
speak really slowly and clearly for me to get it :)
I am collecting simulation data, and the results are geometrically
distributed (or approximately so). From what I can gather

truncated poisson in glm / glmmPQL
Hi
I'm a postgrad in ecology, and have recently started to use R. I'm planning
to model various sets of animal abundance (i.e. count) data in relation to
habitat data using glm's and/or glmmPQL's. However, some of my potential
response variables have many zeros. From what I gather the "family = ..."
option in the command line does not allow for the direct

[OT]Example Data for Non-statisticians
(Sorry for the slightly off topic post)
I'm giving a talk (on data mining) to some non-statisticians (who're
all postgrad students, but a mixture of Science and Commerce majors).
My intention is to show them the importance of statistics when doing
data mining. What I'm thinking of doing is using, hopefully, two
datasets. One from scientific area and another that is

Version 2.12.0 exe file
I have R version 2.9.1 on my computer and the anlaysis is not working
because I need to update to R version 2.12.0 the latest release.
The person incharge of IT tried to download R version 2.12.0 but .exe file referenced in install isn't
there - What might we be doing wrong? We have downloaded as tar.gz,
uncompress then look for .exe file but not present.
Many thanks,

sem: negative parameter variances
Dear Spencer and Prof. Fox,
Thank you for your replies. I'll very appreciate, if you have any ideas concerning the problem described below.
First, I'd like to describe the model in brief.
In general I consider a model with three equations.
First one is for annual GRP growth - in general it looks like:
1) GRP growth per capita = G(investment, migration, initial GRP per

Trying to recover erased logs

I''ve had several people ask me about a comment I made in a previous post;
<quote>
Dan, firstly, if you haven''t touched the compromised system much, do a
"dd" across the raw disk and grep it for log fragments. I have seen vital
erased logs recovered this way before!

I shall try and explain a bit more!

Z aware interpolation
Hello again,
There is any package which does Z aware (real 3D) interpolations?
It can be any method (IDW, kriging or spline) but it should take into
consideration not only x and y coordinates for interpolation, but
also z coordinate. I looked into different packages but it seems i
didn't find the right one.
The ultimate goal is to import the output into a GIS (Geographical
