Access to values of function arguments
Does anyone know of good reading material about the following? The R language definition does not appear to explicitly address my problem (maybe I misread that document?) I have a function definition: func(a) cat("Anova for variable ",a) What I wish to achieve is to call func with a value such as: func(Age) and then obtain: Anova for variable Age Using

Quality of vp3.2 codec?
How good is the video compression in vp3.2? For example, how does it compare (bit rate & quality) to mpeg1, mpeg2, Divx, real Video 8+, Windows Media, etc. etc. It being open source is nice and all, but if it can't be reasonably competitive then there isn't much point to it. I just haven't seen anything that compares vp32 to anything else. (Although to be honest, I haven't

Mozilla port.
I have a very strange problem with Mozilla since I updated it to the latest stable. The font used on the menus are rendered extermly badly such as lots of white spaces between the letters, large blocky font. The font option does not seem to change any of those fonts which makes me think it maybe something to do with X11. However, none of the other things I use have any font issues... Any idea

CairoPDF, Fonts, and Windows 7
Hi All: I have some basic questions about Cairo graphics engine. I'm trying to use the Cairo package to produce PDF output, mainly because I perceive it to be easy to use with a wide variety of fonts. But right now, I'm stuck trying to figure out what fonts are available to be used with Cairo, specifically the CairoPDF function. I've been able to successfully produce some test PDFs

Postscript resolution
Hi all I have some plots that I wish to write out to postcript files. I open the postscript device as suggested [postscript(file="foo.eps",...)], run my plotting commands, and close the device as suggested [dev.off()]. However, when I open the eps files in a postscript viewer such as the gimp, the resolution of the postscript images is *really* bad, very "blocky" and

Cairo creates italized plots?
Hi, Has anyone else run into this weird behaviour where the text in the plots created using Cairo are always italicized. For example, library(Cairo) Cairo(file='cairo_created', type='pdf', dpi=100) plot(1:10) dev.off() This produces the following attached 'cairo_created.pdf' graph. Notice how the text is italicized. The same code but using pdf() as the graphics

Current state of theora & Windows port?
Hello everyone, I'm developing software for a marketing company which creates multimedia presentations. We're currently using proprietary Windows software, but are looking for a royalty-free cross-platform solution. It's important that the solution is royalty- and patent-free because the presentations are copied and given out in large quantities for free (as in beer ;-) We are

X11 font problem
Dear R users, I've just upgraded from R 0.64.1 to 1.1.0 on a PC running Red Hat Linux 6.0. When I ran demo(graphics), after the command: title(main = "January Pie Sales", cex.main = 1.8, font.main = 1) the plot did not materialise and I received this error message: Error in title(main = "January Pie Sales", cex.main = 1.8, font.main = 1) : X11 font at size 22 could

Help with Permissions!
Hi all, I've a strange problem affecting my Ubuntu Gutsy box, and I hope someone with more experience than me can explain why I'm having such a behaviour... white lines in large plot
Hi, I have a plot with about 2 million points. It should be a fairly dense plot over the reals, but I'm seeing many narrow, white vertical lines uniformly spread in my plot where nothing was plotted. I'm using a period as the plot character. I've played around with the cex parameter, but I can't eliminate the white lines without making the plot look too blocky. I'm

variable scope
caveat: I haven't either read actionscript language spec nor really got through swfdec context, frame and such. This is fully based on blocky.swf code inspection. thanks to flare, i can extract the below beautiful code. You don't need to understand the whole thing but there is one thing to notice: border[XY]start are initialized in on(press) and get used in on(release). Currently swfdec

Theora DirectShow filters assembly
Hello everybody, I intend to use Theora as a live video codec in a research project. This project is based on live video broadcast over a poor/slow link, which means lots of frames lost and low bandwith. Until now, it used XViD codec for video compression, which is a working solution but a lot blocky. I made some test with Theora and it looks better in a similar situation. Now, I would like to

Photoshop Elements 7
Ok to start I'm a noob. Not a complete noob, but you may as well assume I wont know how to do something more complex than opening a terminal. I just switched my own computer to ubuntu and I wanted to bring along my copy of pse7 if possible. I followed the guide listed here http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/idiots-guide-installing-photoshop-cs5-ubuntu-1004/ and after a few fumbles and near miss

expected bitrates ?
Fo HDTV sized 422 originals, what kind of bitrates can one expect theora to hit at reasonable quality? Or put another way, what compression ratios can one expect from uncompressed to theora given a target of no significant artifacts, and what kind of peak bitrates would the i/o system require to keep up with the decoder? -JimC --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg

When I play video-a1v7x352y240.ogg, some of the artifacts I noticed in the firewire captured video.dv are no longer there. The *.dv video is sharper, but the *.ogg video, at 1/16th the size,

lasso for variable selection
For "importance" it's probably best to stick with absolute values of coefficients, instead of value of the penalty parameter for which the coefficients changed to non-zero. Friedman skipped a lot of details on his rule ensemble in that talk, due to time constraint. In his implementation he was using his own algorithm, PathSeeker, for which paper and software are available on his
