Point patterns and igraph
Hi,
I have a data set consisting of the x and y coordinate locations of 1600
points. I would like to generate a graph using the functions in igraph.
However the graph making functions in igraph requires the data to be in the
form of an adjacency matrix. I'd like some advice on how to convert my point
pattern to an adjacency matrix or functions out there that would do it
directly. I've

miniscule font size on R console output
Hi,
I am having a situation where I cannot change the output size of the R
console. I have played around with the font format menu but the changes are
only reflected to the script that I type in but not to the output. Everytime
I run a script, I have to go back to font format to increase the output
script, which is currently showing up as small as the dust on my computer
screen. I have mac by

Pivoting in chol
Hi Everyone,
I have modified my version of R-1.4.1 to include choleski with pivoting
(like in Splus). I thought R-core might consider including this in the
next version of R, so I give below the steps required to facilitate
this.
1. Copied Linpack routine "dchdc.f" into src/appl
2. Inserted line F77_SUBROUTINE(dchdc) in src/appl/ROUTINES
3. Inserted "dchdc.f" into

R: Re: chol( neg.def.matrix ) WAS: Re: Choleski and Choleski with pivoting of matrix fails
It works! But Once I have the square root of this matrix, how do I convert it
to a real (not imaginary) matrix which has the same property? Is that
possible?
Best,
Simon

Thanks for your message!
Actually it works quite well for me too.
If I then take the trace of the final result below, I end up with a number
made up of both a real and an imaginary part. This does not probably mean much
if the trace of the matrix below givens me info about the degrees of freedom of
a model...

Creating matrix from long table in database (pivoting)
Hi all,
I have a table in database that is very long and when simplified it has only
two columns in it (id, text). id is the row, and text is the column.
Technically the text is a term and and id is the document.
If simplifying this and assuming there is only one occurrence of the term
per the document. I shall be able to convert this into a binary matrix.
Table looks like this...
*ID** **Text*

R: Re: R: Re: chol( neg.def.matrix ) WAS: Re: Choleski and Choleski with pivoting of matrix fails
Dear Peter,
thank you very much for your answer.
My problem is that I need to calculate the following quantity:
solve(chol(A)%*%Y)
Y is a 3*3 diagonal matrix and A is a 3*3 matrix. Unfortunately one
eigenvalue of A is negative. I can anyway take the square root of A but when I
multiply it by Y, the imaginary part of the square root of A is dropped, and I
do not get the right answer.
I tried

Development Process comment and Email list suggestion
It looks like Mark and others have addressed the development/CVS issues.
We should let their plan be put into effect and give it a chance to work.
Regarding the email list: A number of people have suggested creating more
email lists. I think this is not a good idea because there will be even
more cross posting than there is now between -dev and -users.

Data frame "pivoting"
Dear R experts,
I am trying to solve this problem, related to the possibility of
changing the shape of a data frame using a "pivoting-like" function.
I have a dataframe df of observations as follows:
ID VALIDITY YEAR PROPERTY PROPERTY VALUE
A1 2007 P1 V1
A1 2007 P2 V2
A1 2007 P3 V3
A1 2008 P1 V10
A1 2008 P2 V20
A2 2007 P5 V50
A2 2008 P6 V20

Traffic prioritization and 'class of service' for SIP
We're got a T1 from Sprint that we use for internet. During VIOP calls,
if you download something, the VOIP calls break up.
I found some info at Sprint for adding 'class of service', and I also
have some information on configuring our Cisco routers.
I've read the relevent pages on the wiki, but it seems vauge what's
required and what's required by the NSP (Sprint).

Create tables on the fly in rails?
Hello everyone :) Love the mailing list! I read it as much as I can!
Thanks all you RoR guru''s for providing so much help.
Anyways... So say I have Users, and each user can have a list of Plants
that they like. I would want to give each user a table that has many
entries to show me which plants they like. How could I do this?
I don''t know if there''s a way to do

Why is there no macro facility for R?
Colleagues,
At the risk of being flamed, starting a war, being labeled a heretic . . . etc., I would like to ask the grey-hairs among the R listserve members a simple question. Why did the R core team not develop a macro language for R. I understand that R was designed to be a function-based language, but this does not rule out having macros as a facility that helps in code development.
Thank

Neat way of using R for pivoting?
Hi,
I'd like to use R to do what excel pivot tables do, and plot results.
I've never used R before, and I've managed to do something, but it's quite a
lot of code to do something simple. I can't help but think I'm not "Doing it
the R way".
I could be using R for the wrong thing, in which case, please tell me off.
I was hoping something like plot(by(t,

metafor - interpretion of QM in mixed-effects model with factor moderator
Hi,
I'm using metafor to perform a mixed-effects meta-analysis. I'd like to
test whether the effect is different for animals and plants/whether "group"
(animal/plant) influences the effect size, but am having trouble
interpreting the results I get. I've read previous posts about QM in
metafor, but I'm still a bit confused. I've dummy-coded the factors:

help with randomisation test...
Dear R-people,
I hope asking this is not too cheeky, but I do have a R Problem. I hope
that some of you like to play around with R and can help me.
Its like this. I have several plant species (A,B,C) and 10 replicates
per species. 5 plants per species are damaged, 5 not. I let a
caterpillar feed on each plant and measured the growth of the
caterpillars on control plants (CR) and on damaged

How to allow specific services for machines in LAN behind router?
Hi
I know I still need to learn a lot about firewalls so if I''ve missed
some doc I should have read don''t hesitate to point it out to me.
I have set up shorewall on my desktop and my laptop and everything
appears to be working fine but now I''d like to allow certain services
(like shh, rsync, unison, http) between these two PC''s.
My LAN looks like this:

non linear 3SLS with constraints
hi,
i am new here and wanted to know, before i start learning yet another statistical package:
I want to estimate a system of equations that is non linear in the parameters, using 3SLS. However, i will probably have to constrain some of the parameters to be between, say, zero and one. Is this possible with R, and better, is this easy? If so, since i am an absolute beginner, any pointers where
