rpart for survival fits
Hello Gurus:
When I plot a survival fit using rpart for the classification tree, for each node, there is a decimal based number above the event/total. I tried to see if it's the exponential ratio or logrithmics, neither seem to be the case. I'm wondering if anyone knows what they are.
Thanks,
Karen

rpart vs. randomForest
Greetings. I'm trying to determine whether to use rpart or randomForest
for a classification tree. Has anybody tested efficacy formally? I've
run both and the confusion matrix for rf beats rpart. I've looking at
the rf help page and am unable to figure out how to extract the tree.
But more than that I'm looking for a more comprehensive user's guide

How to show which variables include in plot of classification tree
Dear all
For my research, I am learning classification now.
I was trying some example about classification tree pakages, such as
tree and rpart, for instance,
in Pima.te dataset have 8 variables (include class=type):
library(rpart)
library(datasets)
pima.rpart <- rpart(type ~ npreg+glu+bp+skin+bmi+ped+age,data=Pima.te,
method='class')
plot(pima.rpart, uniform=TRUE)
text(pima.rpart)

Error when I try to build / plot a tree using rpart()
Hi,
I am using the rpart package to build a classification tree. I did
manage to build a tree with data on a previous project. However, when
attampting to build a tree on a project I am working on, I seem to be
getting the error shown below:
> nhg3.rp <- rpart(profitresp ~., nhg3, method="class")
> plot(nhg3.rp, branch=0.4, uniform=T); text(nhg3.rp, digits=3)

RPART - printing full splitting rule number on tree plot
Dear R-users
I am using RPART package to get regression trees. However having trouble getting the text function to put the full splitting rule number on the plot, instead to puts it in scientific notation. When a covariate has 1e4 or greater number of digits then the splitting rule number displayed on the plot is in scientific notation. But print.rpart displays the splitting rules in full.

Large file size while persisting rpart model to disk
I am using rpart to build a model for later predictions. To save the
prediction across restarts and share the data across nodes I have been
using "save" to persist the result of rpart to a file and "load" it
later. But the saved size was becoming unusually large (even with
binary, compressed mode). The size was also proportional to the amount
of data that was used to create the

rpart: plot without scientific notation
While I'm very pleased with the results I get with rpart and
rpart.plot, I would like to change the scientific notation of the
dependent variable in the plots into integers. Right now all my 5 or
more digit numbers are displayed using scientific notation.
I managed to find this:

small bug in plot.rpart?
Hi,
This happens in 2.8 and 2.9. I am posting this here because I am not sure
if one should use bug.report for reporting bugs in unreleased versions.
I was trying to run the example from the help page of plot.rpart. I got

Controlling R fonts through LaTeX
Dear help list
Does anybody know if it is possible to somehow tell R to let LaTeX handle
the fonts for postscript plots produced by R?
It is for a thesis and I have MANY figures. These are created by R scripts
dynamically as the document is compiled, using
the Make system. I see that I can `manually' specify the font family each
time I call the postscript device, but I am looking

plot.rpart ignores uniform=TRUE if graphics device is not open (PR#7361)
Full_Name: Hsiu-Khuern Tang
Version: 2.0.0
OS: Debian GNU/Linux
Submission from: (NULL) (156.153.255.236)
Hi all,
If fit is an rpart object,
plot(fit, uniform=TRUE)
ignores uniform=TRUE if the graphics device is not already open.
To reproduce this:
library("rpart")
example(plot.rpart)
dev.off() # <- works OK without this
plot(fit, uniform=TRUE) # <- uniform=TRUE is ignored

finite mixture model (2-component gaussian): plotting component gaussian components?
Dear Knowledgeable R Community Members,
Please excuse my ignorance, I apologize in advance if this is an easy question, but I am a bit stumped and could use a little guidance.
I have a finite mixture modeling problem -- for example, a 2-component gaussian mixture -- where the components have a large overlap, and
I am trying to use the "mclust" package to solve this problem.

rpart minimum sample size
Is there an optimal / minimum sample size for attempting to construct a
classification tree using /rpart/?
I have 27 seagrass disturbance sites (boat groundings) that have been
monitored for a number of years. The monitoring protocol for each site
is identical. From the monitoring data, I am able to determine the
level of recovery that each site has experienced. Recovery is our

increasing memory size
Help!
I've done this before but can't remember how to do it, and can't find any
reference to it in the docs I have access to now.
I need to increase --vsize (I think), as I'm getting a message when I
start my R session "vector heap too small to load data".
How does one exactly do this, and what is the default setting? I don't
know how much to increase it by.

nnet classification accuracy vs. other models
I was wandering if anybody ever tried to compare the classification
accuracy of nnet to other (rpart, tree, bagging) models. From what I
know, there is no reason to expect a significant difference in
classification accuracy between these models, yet in my particular case
I get about 10% error rate for tree, rpart and bagging model and 80%
error rate for nnet, applied to the same data.
Thanks.

Rpart decision tree
Dear useRs:
I try to plot an rpart object but cannot get a nice tree structure plot. I
am using plot.rpart and text.rpart (please see below) but the branches that
connect the nodes overlap the text in the ellipses and rectangles. Is there
a way to get a clean nice tree plot (as in the Rpart Mayo report)? I work
under Windows and use R2.11.1 with rpart version 3.1-46.
Thank you.

Question about rpart decision trees (being used to predict customer churn)
Hi,
I am using rpart decision trees to analyze customer churn. I am finding that
the decision trees created are not effective because they are not able to
recognize factors that influence churn. I have created an example situation
below. What do I need to do to for rpart to build a tree with the variable
experience? My guess is that this would happen if rpart used the loss matrix

multiple plots in png output
I am using R version 1.9.1 under Linux.
In the past I have had no problem saving a multi-plot page to a postscript
or png device. However, the last time I did this may have been under a
previous version of R. Presently nothing I do seems to succeed in saving
multi-plots, defined (for example) with
mfrow=c(2,2) ... plot(..) .. plot(..)
The same problem has occurred using hist() and plot().

Plotting multiple curves with lattice graphs
Hi List,
I would like to plot multiple curves (parametric
density curves) in one plot.
For example:
# parameters for three normal density curves
parms =
data.frame(ID=c(1,2,3),mu=c(50,55,60),sigma=c(10,12,15))
# I can easily draw three normal density curves using
curve():
curve(dnorm(x,mean=parms$mu[1],sd=parms$sigma[1]),from=0,
to=150, ylab="density", col="red")
