Will a Quad-core i5 processor significantly speed up development on Linux or Mac?
I am looking at getting a new Thinkpad with an i5 processor.
I was curious to what extent this would speed up developing a Ruby on
Rails
app. I am guessing that this depends to what extent multi-threading is
utilized,
but I am not sure---hence the question :^)
If it is not that significant, my other choice would be to get a used
Thinkpad
or Mac Pro, duo-core.
So is there a significant

Dismal R performance of Athlon moble CPU?
I have been using a laptop computer of Pentium III 1.13 Ghz. I heard
that AMD's Athlon has excellent floating point capacity. So I bought a
Athlon 2200+ laptop yesterday. I expected that new Athlon 2200+ will be
twice as fast as the P III 1.13 GB. I ran a R simulation program and
the new computer is only 30% faster, in fact slightly slower than a
Celeron 1.50 GB laptop. I am very disappointed

Resilver/scrub times?
Hi all!
I''ve decided to take the "big jump" and build a ZFS home filer (although it
might also do "other work" like caching DNS, mail, usenet, bittorent and so
forth). YAY! I wonder if anyone can shed some light on how long a pool scrub
would take on a fairly decent rig. These are the specs as-ordered:
Asus P5Q-EM mainboard
Core2 Quad 2.83 GHZ
8GB DDR2/80

eha aftreg performance
G?ran, thanks for the update, I'm just about to install it!
Just wanted to drop you a short line about performance (as you once
requested):
aftreg takes ages on my windows machine to calculate a small set of
7 observations which are not even grouped together by "id". To be a
bit more precise, it takes 2:40 mins on my Intel T9300 Core2 Duo @
2.5 GHz. Bigger samples with about 700

Where are the Centos 7.1 1503 KVM repos please?
Thanks for all the replies.
Looking at the specs for the processor it does not seem to have the vmx features in /proc/cpuinfo:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Core-2-Duo-T6400-Notebook-Processor.35100.0.html
and the output from grep -E ?vmx|svm? /proc/cpuinfo is empty.

Wine almost immediately crashes X
Okay, so I've done the requisite searching around, and I'm either missing something unbelievably simple, or something funny is going on here.
I'm attempting to run a couple of simple games under Wine 0.9.57 in Gutsy on my new System76 laptop. When I attempt to run either of them, the loading graphic comes up, but the moment they attempt to change to fullscreen, X crashes. No warnings,

CPU or memory
Hi R users
Having both a faster CPU and more memory will boost computing power. I was
wondering if only adding more memory (1GB -> 2GB) will significantly reduce
R computation time?
Taka,

OT: AMD CPU actual speed....
I know this is a bit OT, but the subject of CPU speed came up here and I was
(and have been for some time) curious:
What is the actual speed of an AMD CPU? E.g., I have a Athlon 64 X2 "4200+"
but my /proc/cpuinfo shows 1005.164 MHz for the two cores.
What do those mean? Is there a reference for this (huge) discrepancy?
Also, is there a way (and what) to tell what the actuall running

"Xenoppix-x86-64(Xen3.0.2+KNOPPIX-x86_64-5.0.1) CD size" is released.
Dear,
"Xenoppix-x86-64(Xen3.0.2+KNOPPIX-x86_64-5.0.1) CD size" is released.
http://unit.aist.go.jp/itri/knoppix/xen/index-en.html
Xenoppix-x86-64 exploits latest CPU (Intel Core2 Duo and AMD Athlon64).
* Xenoppix-x86-64 boots both X86 and X86_64 linux kernel on HVM of Xen.
* Xenoppix-x86-64 looks like KNOPPIX but all packages are replaced for X86_64.
* Xenoppix-x86-64 also

bad identification of the CPU pentium dual core ( penryn instead of core2 )
lvm 3.7.0 treats pentium dual core ( cpu family 6 model 23 ) as "penryn"
cpu, which triggers a serious bug :
- crashs in openGL programs when llvm is used by mesa package, llvm will
produces binary code with SSE4 instructions, which is not compatible
with pentium dual core, because this CPU doesn't support SSE4
instructions ( bad cpu opcodes ),
with llvm 3.6.2 this bug doesn't

How to set up R for Macbook Pro Intel Core Duo
I just recently purchased a Macbook Pro, Intel Core Duo 2GHz, 512 MB RAM.
After looking through several articles in this forum I found the link to the
R Mac Wiki. I am not that tech-savy but it appeared to me that this link,
http://wiki.urbanek.info/index.cgi?IntelMacR
describes how to install R on a Intel Mac Core Duo to utilise the two cores.
I have also downloaded and installed the

R computing speed
Dear helpers,
I am using R version 2.5.1 to estimate a multinomial logit model using my
own maximum likelihood function (I work with share data and the default
function of R cannot deal with that).
However, the computer (I have an Athlon XP 3200+ with 512 GB ram) takes
quite a while to estimate the model.
With 3 categories, 5 explanatory variables and roughly 5000 observations it
takes 2-3 min.

testing needed: log file concurrency
http://dovecot.org/tmp/concurrency.c
I'd want to know what results this program gives with different systems.
Please test and reply (but don't bother if someone already replied with
the same OS+result). I expect it to print:
- SMP kernels: "page size cut" once in a while
- UP (uniprocessor) kernels: Nothing
- The most important thing is that it never prints "broken

Patch: fragment reconstruction MMX for GCC
Hi again,
I measured my fragment reconstructions against the compiler output from
GCC and well - the new codes perform better, so I brushed up my gcc
inline assembler skills and made a port.
Code is here: http://torus.untergrund.net/code/mmxfrag.c
All routines perform much better now. Inter2 alone got a speedup of
factor 5 on Pentium-M. Athlon CPU's execute roughly 3 times faster.

VMX on Lenovo R61, disabled bi BIOS ?
Hi,
I''m currently trying to use a Linovo R61 Thinkpad equipped w/ Core2 Duo for HVM
Virtualization. BIOS shows CPU/Virtualization->enabled. Xen 3.2.0 shows
(Xeo) VMX disabled by BIOS
Does someone knows any problems with R61 Thinkpads?
Thanks in advance.

Hello List Mates,
I don't know if here is the right place for this question if it's not I
will appreciate it if you can point me to the right mailing list.
I have successfully installed KVM on my x86_64 laptop, however I am getting
the following error when I try to connect "QEMU" from the Virtual Machine

ifcpu(64).c32 does not detect Athlon II X4
Hello,
as said in the subject; I am having problems with ifcpu.c32 and
ifcpu64.c32 detecting a Athlon II X4 CPU correctly as a 64Bit capable
CPU. Ifcpu64.c32 does not detect PAE capabilities, also. Both boot the
last (32Bit, non-PAE) entry. On two other Core2-based machines I have
here, everything works.
Can someone tell me what exactly these modules are looking for? Maybe I
can compare that

FPGA implementation/ players speed?
Today I've got first video clips made by the camera and compressed "on the
fly" - 1280x1024x30fps. Image quality is far from perfect - I don't have
yet any way to preview images, and a single acquisition still requires a
bunch of commands. So I'm really close to have a camera that will be able
to serve the Ogg/Theora streams, now but will it be possible to play it on
a PC? I

Xeon 5160 vs 5080
Chip Clock HT Cache Bus Speed
---------------------------------------------------------
5080 3.7 GHz YES 2MB 1066 MHz
5160 3.0 GHz NO 4MB 1333 MHz
Does the .7 GHz and HT worth more then 4MB cache and higher bus speed? The
application is VoIP so there is not a lot of IO so I would not think Bus
Speed would matter. I am finding mixed information on HT, some say it is
great, others say it
