Application Blocking
On my windows machine I use a software fire will called ZoneAlarm. One
feature I like Is the ability to block applications from using the net. I''ve
looked with Shorewall and wonder if it does, or was ever meant to. Not a
complaint, a curiosity.

Hi,
I think I have network issue on my XP PC here trying to run up
InstantRails and using it. I create an application and run up the
server "ruby scripts/server" and it runs up, but then when I try to
browse to it the browser just sits and spins and doesn''t connect :(

Firewall for virtual machines
I realize I'm not getting a lot of questions answered here lately, and
I'm going to presume that this is for legitimate reasons (i.e., people
don't know or are too busy to think about it), not because they seem
stupid (if they do, please tell me, on the list or privately).
I run Windows as a VMWare guest on top of my CentOS host, and I
generally have not used a firewall on the guest.

histbackback function code needs a change with R 2.4.1 version (PR#9456)
Dear Author and Maintainer of Hmisc contributed package,
Dear R developers,
i noticed a problem with histbackback routine when i installed the last version of R (2.4.1)
(With my previous version, 2.3.1, there was no such a problem)
If, e.g., you simply edit the command
> histbackback(rnorm(20), rnorm(30))
a warning message is printed on the console.

ADS join troubles 3.0.14a
Hi List,
I'm attempting to join a win2k3 domain as a member server with great difficulty.
I've read The HowTo, but am hung when attempting to join the Domain. I can kinit & klist
Which seems good, but the ads join fails.
Can someone help me understand what is causing the error listed below?
Component particulars are:

NT user token: (NULL) what does this mean?
I've just noticed this in the log file for a user that cannot connect. It simply repeats over and over
in the log. What the user sees is that he maps to the share, then gets a message "access denied"
He can however connect to any subdirectory beneath the share. Weird.
The setup is samba 3.0.4 on Redhat compiled with windbind as a member server

VB 6.0 Implementation of cwRsync 2.5.7 Questions...
Tevfik:
I see from your experience that you have Visual Basic. I'm attempting to develop a file deployment/synchronization application using the cwRsync product in a VB 6.0 environment. It will run continuously on a Win box and need to communicate with both Win and UNIX clients. Is this possible?
I inferred that I only needed to run the cwRsync install, which did install the rsync

RE: Shorewall-users Digest, Vol 3, Issue 64
Did I just read completely past this or is this an undocumented feature?
Either way, thanks.
BTW for my first attempt at a Linux firewall, this proved to be a challenge,
but worth it. And most of the problems I''ve had are I/O (idiot operator)
errors. Keep up the good work.

Newbie - Adding a Samba system to a XP workgroup
Being a newbie to UNIX, I have read everything I can find on configuring
SAMBA but everywhere I look it states that the SAMA machine MUST be a PDC in
a local domain. At this time I have a small XP workgroup which does not
require passwords or excessive security. I would prefer to keep the
workgroup because my wife uses one of the XP computers and would complain
long and loud if now she needed to

smbclient times out to 445 after upgrade to XP SP2
I think this is probably an XP SP2 issue but perhaps you've seen
it before?
We use smbclient 3.0.13 to download files from a machine
"Testmachine" that used to run Windows 2000 and use the
zonealarm firewall. A couple of days ago it was upgraded
to XP SP2 (fully patched) using the built in
Microsoft firewall. One folder "Example" was "shared" and the

RE: How to log and block specific application a ctivity
Have read the comments about Shorewall not being a personal
firewall, etc., and am not necessarily advocating such use,
but, trying to get into the poster''s head, and doing some
creative thinking, thought that possibly some form of EGID
rule might help out if there is a reasonable reason behind
the question. It is not hard for me to see how something
like this could be useful.

Cygwin Rsync 2.5.6 over SSH hangs on Win2k->Win2k
When using Cygwin Rsync 2.5.6/OpenSSH 3.6.1 for copying files from
Win2k->Win2k, I get 2 or 3 hung processes on the receiving-side out of about
every 50 runs. These hung processes cause the system to be unable to
reboot(?!), requiring a hard reset. Killing the processes allows a graceful
reboot every time. I'm currently running both ssh and rsync as services on
the recieving side.

Is rsync copying over the entire file? Sent bytes matches actual file size.
Hi,
I am testing rsync and it looks as though it is copying over the entire
file which doesn't sound right.

I have just tested rsync with a 571Mb zip file containing our Backup
Exec installation source.
The command I am running is:
