hierarhical cluster analysis of groups of vectors
I want to do hierarchical cluster analysis to compare 10 groups of vectors with five vectors in each group (i.e. I want to make a dendogram showing the clustering of the different groups). I've looked into using dist and hclust, but cannot see how to compare the different groups instead of the individual vectors. I am thankful for any help. Anders

lattice/xyplot: horizontal y-axis labels with scales(relation="free")
I would like to create an xyplot with varying y-axis limits and horizontal labels at the y-axis tickmarks. The following does not seem to work, although I think it should, going by the documentation for par. R version 2.5.1, Windows XP Prof. Thanks for a clue. Andreas Krause library(lattice) # axis labels for y-axis are horizontal xyplot(Sepal.Length ~ Sepal.Width | Species, data=iris) #

Lattice barchart with different fill pattern
Dear list, I am new to lattice plots. I want to make a barchart with 10 and more levels. I need to use a grey scale for printing purposes. The problem is that with 10 or more levels in factors it is very difficult to distinguish each level in the plot and legend, since the greys are very similar (some levels have value of zero and don't appear). Here is an example of my problem: df <-

Confidence intervals for predicted values in nls
Dear all I have tried to estimate the confidence intervals for predicted values of a nonlinear model fitted with nls. The function predict gives the predicted values and the lower and upper limits of the prediction, when the class of the object is lm or glm. When the object is derived from nls, the function predict (or predict.nls) gives only the predicted values. The se.fit and interval aguments

vectorization question
If you look at the structure, you'll see: > x$V4 <- 0 > str(x) `data.frame': 4 obs. of 4 variables: $ V1: int 1 2 3 4 $ V2: int 5 6 7 8 $ V3: int 9 10 11 12 $ V4: num 0 Don't know if this is the intended result. In any case, you're probably better off using data.matrix, as > data.matrix(x) V1 V2 V3 V4 1 1 5 9 0 2 2 6 10 0 3 3 7 11 0 4 4 8 12

Mahalanobis
Dear all Why isn'it possible to calculate Mahalanobis distances with R for a matrix with 1 row (observations) more than the number of columns (variables)? > mydata <- matrix(runif(12,-5,5), 4, 3) > mahalanobis(x=mydata, center=apply(mydata,2,mean), cov=var(mydata)) [1] 2.25 2.25 2.25 2.25 > mydata <- matrix(runif(420,-5,5), 21, 20) > mahalanobis(x=mydata,

Different behaviour in Linux and Windows (PR#1293)
Hi I have written a small function to calculate distances between pairs of landmarks ('my.dist' bellow). I gave it to a colleague that works with MSWindows and the function doesn't give the right answer: R 1.4.1 for Linux: > my.dist() [1] 22 561 R 1.4.1 for Windows: > my.dist() [1] 22 560 Warning message: Replacement length not a multiple of the elements to replace in

memory problems
Hi I'm computing a bca interval using bca.ci from the boot package. When I try to use this I get an error > library(boot) > boot(logglm.data,boot.fishpower,2500,coef.vec=coeflm.vec)->blm8901 > bca.ci(blm8901,index=29) Error: cannot allocate vector of size 456729 Kb However my machine has 2GB of memory and without R running I only have 112M of memory used. Is there something

unlist
Hi I have a list with several data.frames, all with the same number of colunms but different number of rows, and I'd like to transform this list into a single dataframe. I need to mimic an rbind of all dataframes ... Transform doesn't seem to work :-( Thanks EJ -- Ernesto Jardim <ernesto at ipimar.pt> Bi?logo Marinho/Marine Biologist IPIMAR - Instituto Nacional de Investiga??o

aov problem
I am using R to make two-way ANOVA on a number of variables using g <- aov(var ~ fact1*fact2) where var is a matrix containing the variables. However the outcome seem to be dependent on the order of fact1 and fact2 (i.e. fact2*fact1) gives a slightly (factor of 1.5) different result. Any ideas why this is? Thanks for any help Anders

Unique in DataFrame
Hello, I have little doubt, and I do not think that the way I solve the problem is the best way to do it. The following is a small dataset x<-data.frame(city="Barcelona",sales=253639) x<-rbind(x,data.frame(city="Madrid",sales=223455)) x<-rbind(x,data.frame(city="Lisbon",sales=273633)) x<-rbind(x,data.frame(city="Madrid",sales=266535))

NEdit Highligth patterns for R
Hi I've just submitted to the NEdit development team a R highligth patterns for NEdit (www.nedit.org). NEdit is a text editor for LINUX which I use to write small R functions. In my opinion is a very good tool for small scripts, maybe for huge projects is not the best. I'm attaching the R-5.1.pats file so you can try it. As usual contributions and comments are welcome. Samba rpms now available from CentOS Storage SIG
Hi Anoop, I can see the centos-release-samba412 rpm in the mirror ( http://mirror.centos.org/centos-8/8/extras/x86_64/os/Packages/) but once I try to update Samba, it says that no packages are marked for update. There isn't a samba-412 in the storage repo ( http://mirror.centos.org/centos-8/8/storage/x86_64/) as far as I can see (in opposition to samba-411). Am I doing something wrong?
