CRAN task view: Multivariate
Hello,
I've assembled a Multivariate ctv (with a lot of help from Achim Zeleis,
who has now posted the view on CRAN).
I'd be grateful for comments regarding missing packages / functions.
Opinions on the organisation of the view would also be appreciated, as
well as having any errors pointed out. I've adopted a rather broad and
vague definition of "multivariate", which may

Producing "Editable" Graphs for PowerPoint
Hello,
(apologies, I'm not entirely sure whether this question is about R or my
limitations with PowerPoint). I've submitted a paper (which has been
accepted) but the journal now require me to submit graphs that are
"editable in PowerPoint". I would be grateful for suggestions as to
how I should do this.
The best route seems to be to copy-and-paste the figures from the

R and condor
Hello,
I would be extremely grateful if anyone is able to provide any (rather obscure) advice on using R with Condor. I think I'm following Xianhong Xie's instructions (R News 5(2) 13-15) correctly, but my job just stays held in the queue (for days / months). I've checked condor_status to make sure there are plenty of machines available, but can't see any way to attack the

R package to perform Horn's parallel analysis
I am seeking information on whether anyone has written code to perform
Horn's parallel analysis (a procedure that informs the selection of the
proper number of components in PCA) in R.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. Please respond
off-list at the email address below.

optim or nlminb for minimization, which to believe?
I have constructed the function mml2 (below) based on the likelihood function described in the minimal latex I have pasted below for anyone who wants to look at it. This function finds parameter estimates for a basic Rasch (IRT) model. Using the function without the gradient, using either nlminb or optim returns the correct parameter estimates and, in the case of optim, the correct standard

Recommended GUI for Speex
Hi all,
I have recently added Speex support to my app (http://sbooth.org/Max/) and
am in the process of creating a GUI for the user to control the codec
parameters. I am new to Speex and as such I am not really sure which
parameters are more important than others, and deserve prominent
placement, etc. Is there a recommended GUI for people to follow or use as
an example?

Recommendation on a probability textbook (conditional probability)
I need to refresh my memory on Probability Theory, especially on
conditional probability. In particular, I want to solve the following
two problems. Can somebody point me some good books on Probability
Theory? Thank you!
1. Z=X+Y, where X and Y are independent random variables and their
distributions are known.
Now, I want to compute E(X | Z = z).
2.Suppose that I have $I \times J$ random number

Local Moran's I / Getis and Ord and Rousseauw Cluster Algorithms
Sorry for the repetition, unless I've got bad deja vu this questions been
asked before but I couldn't turn up an answer on CRAN. Is there already
any code in existence for local dependence measures such as Moran's I or
Getis and Ord G?
Also, S-Plus has a number of interstingly named Cluster Algorithms based on
some previous stand-alone fortran algorithms (agnes, daisy etc.) which

Loop or some other way to parse by data generated values when it is not linear
I'm sorry for the really vague subject line but I am not sure how to
succinctly describe what I am doing and what the problem is.
But, here goes:
1. I have data with two-way data with frequencies. Below is an
example, though in reality I am looking at about 10 different variables
that I am crossing so the values of X1 and X2 change. X1 and X2 are
place holders.
Here's the dataset

pairs: altering pch options on upper and lower panel of pairwise scatter plots
Hello,
I can't figure out how to use the upper.panel and lower.panel options in
pairs to alter the label options for either panel independently of the
other.
I would like to be able to show the pairwise scatter plots for the data
as they are (a vanilla pairs plot?) but separately to be able to label
the points according to a factor level. It is easy enough to do this
independently, but I

getElementsBySelector problem in IE
I''m having this problem with IE and getElementsBySelector, but am a
relative js novice, so quite possible -- likely even -- that I''m doing
something stupid. Either way, a fresh pair of eyes would help.
Basically I''m duplicating a fieldset within a form (so you can upload
more than one photo). [BTW, the fieldsets have a CSS id which relates

Managing core files using coreadm (Solaris + Puppet)
Hi all,
I have an interesting one - Solaris uses a lot of commands to
configure specific items. A simple
example is coreadm. In this example:
# coreadm -p "/var/core/core_%n_%f_%u_%g_%t_%p"
will set the directory and filename to dump core files (with some
expansion).
The question is - how to get this to run only if the config has
changed. I have come up with 2 options, neither of

Dear [R] people
Could you please help with following data transformation.
Any suggestions, hints, references and even guessing on performing any
of the following steps are highly appreciated. Those transformations are
crucial for my work.

extract variance components
HI,
I would like to extract the variance components estimation in lme function
like
a.fit<-lme(distance~age, data=aaa, random=~day/subject)
There should be three variances \sigma_day, \sigma_{day %in% subject } and
\sigma_e.
I can extract the \sigma_e using something like a.fit$var. However, I cannot
manage to extract the first two variance components. I can only see the

Fitdistr and MLE for parameter lambda of Poisson distribution
Hello!
I would like to get MLE for parameter lambda of Poisson distribution. I
can use fitdistr() for this. After looking a bit into the code of this
function I can see that value for lambda and its standard error is
estimated via
estimate <- mean(x)
sds <- sqrt(estimate/n)
Is this MLE? With my poor math/stat knowledge I thought that MLE for
Poisson parameter is (in mixture of LaTeX

Cross-compilers versus windows compilers (was optimal win dows R machine)
Good morning,
May I ask a naive follow up to this? Having now been granted limited
rights to use R-windows on a work PC, I wish to set up my home PC to support
compiling packages and so on. I currently have a working Linux set-up at
home, is there any general advice as to whether it would be better to add in
the cross-compilers there or is it better to persuade my home PC to dual
boot windows

destroy vs delete
what is the difference between destroy and delete in AR
I am not sure what they mean by
"Destroys the record with the given id by instantiating the object and
calling destroy<http://api.rubyonrails.com/classes/ActiveRecord/Base.html#M000866>(all
the callbacks are the triggered). If an array of ids is provided, all
of them are destroyed."
