No performance increase from dual-core processors?
Hey all,
I was planning on getting a new computer for the new year to help with
my dissertation research, and recently had an opportunity to compare the
performance of my 1.6 GHz Pentium M laptop, and a 2.8 GHz dual-core
Pentium processor (both running WinXP professional 32-bit). I run a lot
of long simulations, so I was hoping to get something that would speed
them up. I ran a few quick

Asterisk/Zaptel 64-bit?
Dear All,
I was wondering will there be any problems or changes that I will need
to do to compile the current
Asterisk(1.2.7)/Zaptel(1.2.5)/Libpri(1.2.2) source from
www.asterisk.org into a 64-bit binaries? I am currently using the
following hardware for my new server.
CPU: Pentium D 930 3.0 GHz
Mobo: Intel D945PSN Motherboard
RAM: 512MB 533MHz DDR-2
Drive: SATA II Seagate 160GB
Card: TE406

Dismal R performance of Athlon moble CPU?
I have been using a laptop computer of Pentium III 1.13 Ghz. I heard
that AMD's Athlon has excellent floating point capacity. So I bought a
Athlon 2200+ laptop yesterday. I expected that new Athlon 2200+ will be
twice as fast as the P III 1.13 GB. I ran a R simulation program and
the new computer is only 30% faster, in fact slightly slower than a
Celeron 1.50 GB laptop. I am very disappointed

Will This Computer Run 64 bit Ubuntu/R?
After doing some reading about 64-bit systems and software I am still
somewhat uncertain about some things. I have a Dell Dimension XPS 400 with a
dual core Intel Pentium D 940 (3.2 GHz) and 4 Gb of memory. I currently dual
boot the system with XP Professional and Ubuntu 8.04 (32 bit). If I simply
install Ubuntu 8.04 (64 bit) on this system will it run the 64 bit linux
version of R? I would

DELL SC430 + CentOS 4.0 + SATA HDDs
Dear gurus,
Three DELL SC430s were purchased by my company a few months back and
I've been told that when they spoke with the DELL representatives,
they were informed that these servers were fully RHEL 4.0 compatible.
Specs of the servers:-
- Pentium 4 - 2.8 GHz
- 1 GB RAM
- 2x 250GB SATA HDDs
I tried installing CentOS 4.0 on it but it doesn't seem to be able to
detect any hard

Speed up R
Dear R Users,
I hope that there is someone who has an experience with a problem that I
describe below and will help me.
I must buy new desktop computer and I'm wondering which processor to choose
if my only aim is to speed up R. I would like to reduce a simulation time -
sometimes it takes days. I consider buying one of them (I'm working under
Win XP 32 bit):

Xeon 5160 vs 5080
Chip Clock HT Cache Bus Speed
---------------------------------------------------------
5080 3.7 GHz YES 2MB 1066 MHz
5160 3.0 GHz NO 4MB 1333 MHz
Does the .7 GHz and HT worth more then 4MB cache and higher bus speed? The
application is VoIP so there is not a lot of IO so I would not think Bus
Speed would matter. I am finding mixed information on HT, some say it is
great, others say it

Xen +suse 10.1 +ASUS A6iTc w/AMD Turion Dual Core processor
Hi
I have a new ASUS A6Tc laptop with 1.6 GHz AMD Turion dual core
processor. I get a strange error:
<4>0000:00:0b.0 OHCI: BIOS handoff failed (BIOS bug ?) 000007b4
<4>0000:00:0b.1 EHCI: BIOS handoff failed (BIOS bug ?) 01010001
This only occurs when booting into the xen kernel, not without xen.
Can someone tell me why and how it can be fixed?

hardware and network requirements
Hi
i'm planning to migrate a callcenter to asterisk and VOIP, the call
center can have up to 25 cuncurrents agents logged in.
I'll have some simplty IVR business logic and the some queues.
Can a normal server with
1 GB ram
100 GB HDD
Pentium 4 3.6 Ghz CPU
Ethernet 10/100/1000
Support this?
Would you suggest me a particular products?
The server and the agents will be in the same LAN,

Intel Pentium Celeron
Hi all,
i'm going to install asterisk with a 4 BRI (HFC chipset) on a Celeron at
2.6 GHz
I don't known Celeron performance, but i listen that is not very good.
Could I have some performance isuue with this kind of processor ?
Thanks for all

Number of worker processes on hyperthreaded processor
Good morning,
The tuning page says worker_processes should be at least the number of CPU cores on a dedicated server. In the case of hyper-threading, should this be the number of cores or the number of threads?
For example the Intel Core i7-2600 Quadcore[1] has 4 cores and 8 threads. Would I start my worker_processes at 4 or 8?
Finally, would the same apply to Nginx worker processes?

[LLVMdev] what is the Line number of Phi Node with addr2line
reg2mem does not eliminate phi nodes the way codegen does, it just
converts ssa values to non-ssa values.
It's not the same thing.

[LLVMdev] what is the Line number of Phi Node with addr2line
Hi, Daniel
I want to profile load/store operations, in order to reduce the overhead of
profiling, I try to instrument the optimized llvm ir, which has phi nodes.
BTW, when the value of some load/store operations may have multi-source,
then the load will be translated into phi nodes, and all phi nodes are
placed in the front of BB. Sometimes, the position is not where the load
happens, is there

Will a Quad-core i5 processor significantly speed up development on Linux or Mac?
I am looking at getting a new Thinkpad with an i5 processor.
I was curious to what extent this would speed up developing a Ruby on
Rails
app. I am guessing that this depends to what extent multi-threading is
utilized,
but I am not sure---hence the question :^)
If it is not that significant, my other choice would be to get a used
Thinkpad
or Mac Pro, duo-core.
So is there a significant

LUKS full disk Encryption question
From RHEL docs:
"The default implementation of LUKS in Red Hat Enterprise Linux is AES
128 with a SHA256 hashing. Ciphers that are available are:
AES - Advanced Encryption Standard - FIPS PUB 197
Twofish (A 128-bit Block Cipher)
Serpent
cast5 - RFC 2144
cast6 - RFC 2612"
My question is:
What will be the performance impact on my Celeron 1.73 GHz CPU and/or
hdd

Ubuntu vs Mac OS X
Hi !
I have installed R-2.7.0 64-bits on a computer where the new Ubuntu
version (8.04) was installed. This computer is a 3.2 GHz Dual-core with
2 Gb of RAM.
To test how fast (I though !) this machine is, I compared two simple
matrix manipulations between Ubuntu and my laptop (a MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz
with also 2 Gb of RAM under Mac OS X 10.5.2). By the way, I install the
normal version of R

FFT
Hi,
Is FFT implemented in R takes advantage of multi-processors?
I ran this benchmark from from http://www.sciviews.org, and AMD Opteron
2.2 GHz performs better than AMD Opteron 1.8 GHz on all test cases,
except FFT operation.
Both machines run same OSs (RedHat WS 3) and 2.2 GHz has more memory (2
GB RAM) than 1.8 GHz (1 GB RAM). The only difference is that 1.8 GHz is
a dual-processor
